Amiot 143 ASW
« on: March 19, 2020, 10:28:22 AM »
Another one I've had on the severely cluttered bench is the old Heller W.U.A. (World's Ugliest Aircraft), Amiot 143. Originally thought about doing it as a civilian sight-seeing bird, all those windows would make it ideal. But then another idea took hold; pressed into service as an anti-submarine/maritime patrol aircraft. Interior, non-existent in the kit, has been cobbled together with various lumps of plastic and significant quantities of imagination, including the downstairs copilot's (Yes, really!) seat, and his control column hanging from the ceiling. Again, really. The French were... different that way.

Tonight I finally got the two halves together, and found out what I thought I would find - the fit could be better. Much better. Might have been better if Heller had designed the fuselage as a set of sub-assemblies instead of just two large chunks of port and starboard. Scheme will be sort of a standard sea grey over white, done with a hairy stick because it leaves the sort of rough appearance that many maritime aircraft devolved into after flying over, in, and near, salt spray.

Lot more painting and cursing to do on this, but the end is in sight. Armee de l'Aire, or Aeronavale? Probably the first, because trying to find the anchor to go over the unadorned fin flash would be an exercise in futility, and making them myself would just lead to more grey hairs. If I have any left that aren't.

Well you would think that slow, ugly with plenty of downward vision would be ideal for ASW work.
Nice work so far.. remember the HELLer is an appropriate name with some of their kits.

Interesting.   In midst of stash couple days ago spotted this kit.   Wondered what might do with it.   Came up with nothing.   MPA seems a good move.   Will be watching.

It's not really a slam dunk, though, with interwar French aircraft, is it?

Post-war French aircraft were, for the most part, beautiful. I often wonder if they were doing penance for the stuff they inflicted on the heavens pre-war!  ;D

Primarily the military ones, many of the civil aircraft are very attractive.

That's a fantastic idea for the desperately lovely Amiot 143!

Perfect use of that view.

I've always liked the plane, and though the kit is very much of it's time, that just makes it that much easier to carve up in bashing.
It would have made a dandy ASW aircraft, too - looking forward to seeing what happens.

Couple of old Matra SNEB pods, might have been from the Airfix Harrier or Jaguar, fins scrounged from somewhere, some plastic sheet over the front, and I have a couple of depth charges for the Amiot 143. World's Ugliest Aircraft is going to get some bite!

There's something about French 1930s designs that is just the epitome of the term Sexy-Ugly.

I couldn't agree more and those devils at Amiot sure had some of the most seductively streamlined undercarriages around!

I like the look of those depth-charges too.

Well put. I also like the spats but can't help but wonder why Félix Amiot thought thought that undercarriage streamlining was going to help?

All that said, I can't wait to see how this build turns out  :-*

Lotsa pain with World's Ugliest Aircraft. The squadron markings are a pale off-white, which obviously doesn't show up well on a white undercoat. So I have to mask around them and paint something more visible, and I figured that this blue, Tamiya X-14, was rather fetching. But it's also translucent, so it's going to take a lot of coats. And being acrylic water-based paint, it's making the decals a bit lumpy. Some areas have been roughly filled to almost the edge, they'll be masked and filled later. But it's difficult seeing where the decal ends and the white paint begins. GRRRRRR!

Why do I do this to myself? This is supposed to be a relaxing hobby. Maybe I should take up the bagpipes.

I've got to tip my hat to you, Rat.

Often I stupidly challenge myself by trying to paint things like straight and curved lines free-hand.

So I think you've got some measure of courage in this and I wish you every success!

More paint disasters. But I finally got Tamiya XF-54 Dark Grey to adhere after the black didn't. Still some touch-up to do, but she's looking better. Which, of course, is a relative word for the Amiot 143. Soon it will be time for decaling, and then the part that I'm truly dreading - landing gear. I'm not confident that the gear struts will be strong enough to support it.

Painting them like that is a real test which you passed with flying colors!

Well, black mostly but you know what I mean.
