Title: RNZAF TF-4K Phantom c.1988
Post by: KiwiZac on February 12, 2017, 02:41:47 PM
Hi all,
A little while ago I did this (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5813.0), and worked on expanding Greg's story (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=1192.msg1589;topicseen#msg1589). Unfortunately the story was lost in a PC self-wipe, but that hasn't stopped me working on the second Kiwi Phantom: this time, a trainer in the Lizard scheme of the late 80s.

Hasegawa kit with self-made resin copies of the Fujimi exhausts, Ventura and Flying Kiwis decals with a pair of random Sidewinders and a pair of Hasegawa SUU-20 pods to represent a Toom on a training mission. Tamiya acrylics brushed using the RNZAF's camouflage scheme which I happened across online. Lovely!

I'll restart the story tomorrow at work as I still have two Phantoms I want to build.

That's really sweet, Zac! The paint work excellent and those Kiwis sure add extra oomph to your 'Toom!

The cool camo reminds me more than a little of European One, was it actually the very same or roughly similar (eg. using BS colours instead of FS colours), or was it all a coincidence?

Thanks all! Some nice and quick fun recycling an old build.

pigflyer - you can't go wrong with a Ventura sheet, it'll sort you for loads of projects from trainers to transports. Their website doesn't list it but they are out there. Let me know if you want me to keep an eye out and buy one on your behalf.

Kelmola - in the real world the RNZAF simply painted over the tan in the Skyhawks' original SEA scheme with a dark grey to create the new look. I'll check the scheme diagrams when I get home as they should have BS or FS numbers - I used approximations from Tamiya with a mix-to-taste for the FS34102.

Turns out they used FS colours! Here's one of the diagrams.
