Title: B-201 bomber
Post by: finsrin on December 23, 2014, 01:41:52 PM
Aint done this before.  Taking-posting pictures of kitbash in progress.  Is 1/72.
Was browsing thru stash opening various kits to see if something "clicked" for bashing together.  There was a click.
No preplanning same as Spider Vemon my first kit bash.  Posted back when.
Looked doable to start with Airfix He177 & B-24.  177+24=201 hence B-201 unless something better comes along.
Core kits are He177 fuselage and B-24 wings.  There is an unusual treatment (skill challenging) of B-24 wings (under construction) which I will take pictures of post and explain.

After completing first phase of wing work was waiting for glue & putty to dry.  Turned attention to fuselage to make it more USAAC 46 like.  Is a B-201 not He177.  Back to opening more kits to fiddle with parts/ideas.  This is fun !
Ended up now installing MPC B-29 turrets and gunners aiming blisters.
First of turret install pictures are attached.

Is this for the federal republic United States of Germany? ;)

"Federal Republic United States of Germany" - now that is good one !

Using tape assembly took pictures showing general configuration.  Cut 5/16" off B-24 wing root.  Happens to give near perfect match of wings and near perfect engine spacing.  Both with same cut.
Next attached is cutout of tail gun to accept B-24 tail turret.  Fits well.  See hole for gunner blister on fuselage side.
Next is underside where you see cutout for B-17G chin turret.  Turns out when mounted to cockpit floor, downward distance is right for turret exposure about same as on B-17.
Next shows all three B-29 turrets mounted in fuselage.
Parts are fitting better than I woulda thought.

This is awesome Bill. Go big or go home I always say. The OGL will not like to see one of these bad boys flyover Pyongyang.

That six engine configuration fits this baby like a glove.

Definitely a truly inspired concept with a lot of genius thrown in for good measure!

Appreciate the interest.  Still working on it.
Glued halves of both wings together and chin turret to cabin floor so it rotates.
Chin turret not simple as it seems.  Took a few disassembles & cleanups & reassembles to get working.
After cuttings and sandings, tack glued B-24 engine mount extension to each He-177 wing.  Inner engines will be higher on wing than lowered mounting of B-24.  With oval cowlings trick is to have rotated position and up/down tilt or lack of it OK compared to  B-24.  He-177 wing has dihedral outside of engine.  So,,, am fiddling with positions of inner mount extensions.
Plus ya got longitudinal position stepping of engines to try and match.
Positioning inner engines is multidimensional affair.  Didn't see that at first.
Two B-24 kits required for this kitbash.

Attached progress pics.
Can see how chin turret installs and protrudes under nose.
Cut off inboard part of elevators to improve tail turret field of fire.

The chin turret is an excellent addition! Now I'm imagining this baby bristling with guns and scaring off the opposition!

You've got an enviable and uncanny knack for always adding the right thing, Bill!

Thanks guys.  Been filling and filing wing joints to blend missmatch places.  Painted props.  Assembled painted landing gear.  Bit of chin turret adjustments.  Final assembly is next.
