Title: North American AT-16 Harvard IIB
Post by: Robomog on March 02, 2024, 06:25:36 AM
Hi all

Completed no.3

This is a 1/72 Special Hobby North American AT-16 Harvard IIB built straight out of the box but in the markings of an aircraft operating from White Waltham.

I had the pleasure of flying in this aircraft in 2023, a birthday present.

This is a very good kit and covers a number of the training variants. The kit includes resin and PE parts and the decals are excellent.

Because of the way they dealt with the different canopy types I had to by an aftermarket masking set and I have to admit although massively fiddley to put on the results are brilliant.

Here's the pics..

Airbrushed using Tamiya paints and finished with MTN rattlecan matt varnish. Decals from kit and Extradecal serial numbers plus some from decal stash.

As always, all comments and criticisms gratefully accepted.

Smart looking paint scheme.  You did catch me off guard with the "AT" moniker as I was expecting to see it adorned with weapons

Not to worry, 'Mog. In the case of Noorduyn-built Harvard IIBs, the Lend-Lease designation AT-16 just stood for 'Advanced Trainer'  ;)

Some airframe changes were made to meet local production techniques and RCAF equipment requirement ... so the USAAF type number 16 was assigned to distinguish the Lend-Lease Harvard IIBs from otherwise similar US-built AT-6As.

Great jo, Mog! The sharp canopy framing really stands out and so does the rest of the paint job.

The one plan I have for my NA Harvard/Texan/SNJ is to give it a three-blade Hamilton Standard propeller from a B-17 or B-24 as I feel it would make the aircraft look more "purposeful" as the first step in improving its appearance.

Absolutely! A bit like the RW CAC Wirraway's 10 foot de Havilland ADH2 3-blader on steroids!
