Title: Australian War Memorial Models
Post by: ScranJ51 on July 14, 2018, 05:47:08 PM
Apologies to those not in Oz!

I'm a volunteer guide at the Australian War Memorial, and decided to make models of some of the exhibits I talk about in my stories.

Here is an example - a Zero fighter.  I managed to create pretty much the same colour scheme and the serial number of the actual aircraft.

Next is a German Albatross Fighter.  - There is a story behind this one:

LT James Sandy (Pilot) and SGT Henry Hughes (observer) were the crew of an Aussie RE8 from 3 SQN AFC flying an artillery observation mission over the front in late 1917.  Hughes was previously a mechanic - this is his first operational mission.

During the mission they are attacked by 6 Albatross fighters.  Hughes fights back, and doesn pretty well, hitting one Albatross and damaging it's fuel line, forcing the aircraft to land behind the Aussie front lines.  The aircraft is captured by Aussie troops and eventually is taken over by 3 SQN AFC.

Meanwhile, Sandy and Hughes are still in trouble - 5 v 1, but then two more RE8's arrive and for some reason the Germans no longer like the odds, so break off.  Sandy and Hughes are last see flying straight and level, so the other crews assume they are continuing their mission.

But Sandy and Hughes don't return that night.

The next morning the SQN gets a message about an aircraft down in a field beside a hospital about 80KM from where Sandy and Hughes were last seen - so they go to investigate.

The SQN find Sandy and Hughes still in the aircraft - killed by ONE single bullet.  The round had passed through Hughes lung and lodged in Sandy's spine - likely killing Sandy immediately.  Hughes, wounded and with no parachute, was now a passenger and bled to death - the aircraft so well rigged/trimmed that it had flown on until it ran out of fuel and crashed itself in the field.

RIP James Sandy and Henry Hughes.

Havn't been to the War Memorial since 1978 (????) 'spose I should remedy that ::)
Great but slightly sad back story for the Albatross.

Great but slightly sad back story for the Albatross.

The AWM is well worth visiting.  It has changed quite a lot since 1978.  The new aircraft wing is excellent and includes displays of a Zero, a BF-109G, a Meteor and a Mosquito and a Lancaster and when I last visited two years ago included a movie by Peter Jackson which is well worth watching (last IIRC about 15 minutes).  The Korean War display is also excellent and well worth looking at, as is the Vietnam War one.  They have extensively re-developed the other displays.  If you visit at sunset they have a ceremony with the Federation Guard.

I, being FAAMAN's flatmate at the time, attended the AWM in July 1982 but not for long enough - was during a break whilst there as a member of the Royal Guard for the change of Governor General (Sir Zelman Cowan outgoing, Sir Ninian Stephen incoming).

Really need to get back there & to the RAN FAA Museum (now Australia's Museum of Flight).

So that was you lurking 'round in the shadows in the flat, I thought Crazy was nuts swearing there was someone else in the flat  ;)

I wondered where you disappeared to back in '82 Wombat, thought you'd been kidnapped  ;D ;D

I'll get to the AMW sooner or later, only a three hour drive from Sydney

Quite creditable replicas. I especially like the biplanes.

Keep 'em comin'!
