SAAB Projekt 1500-01 - A 38 Järven
« on: August 23, 2024, 07:54:09 PM »
In the 1950s and 1960s SAAB were engaged in the development of a future fighter/attack plane. The were no end to the designers imagination. From a ultra small single seater to a multi engined mini B-58 - everything was tested. On the list was also a VTOL attack plane - the Projekt 1500-01, based on the Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine of the Harrier. It never went beyond the drawing board.

But what if!

Flygvapnets new VTOL attack plane entered service in 1974 as the A 38 Järven (the wolverine) with Flygflottilj F6 at Karlsborg Air Base. In the following years it was engaged in close support operations with the swedish army and to that purpose had several small detachment based in clearings of the forests of Central Sweden.

My build will be based a Harrier GR.7 kit from Mister Craft. That kit was acquired by pure accident and is in my opinion a waste of money - way below current standard. It was condemned to be stored in eternal oblivion in a corner of deep darkness. But with a lot cutting, swearing and good old nordic "sejd" it might be turned into something usefull.

Your description of the kit was too kind.

What are your plans for the delta wings?  Sourced from another kit or crafted from plastic card stock?
A delta wing Harrier clone is certainly an interesting subject.

Good luck!

And love your Järven name too!  As Jeff's tagline points out: "'Research shows wolverines don't like to be teased"  ;D

Oh very nice plan.. and great use of what sounds like a fairly ordinary kit.

By using the dimensions of the Pegasus engine I have made a 1/72 scale drawing of the Projekt 1500-01. Comparing it to the kits fuselage it turns out, that the fuselage of the Järven was at bit longer. So - CUT

I always thought model kits were 3D puzzles. :-\

Now all you need to do is randomly jumble up all the parts and, ta-da, job done!  ;D

Ta-Da

The parts have been jumbled up and here is the result. The fuselage have been extended and the front exhausts from the Pegasus engine have been lowered as the front and rear exhausts were in line on Järven.

There's so much putty & stuff on there it almost looks like it's been carved from a block of wood! ;D

I often think a lot of my own builds are more akin to sculpting than engineering. I think MAT is combining the best of both. Should be pretty neat.
