Air Cushion Vehicles and Hovercraft
« on: October 14, 2012, 07:59:09 AM »
So does anyone remember that image suggesting a hovercraft type vehicle that would allow aircraft to take off from bomb damaged runways?  The artwork showed an F-15 in the image on a platform that was just large enough to accommodate the landing gear and it had some kind of jet engine unit mounted at the front that provided propulsion and lift for the platform.  I thought it was kind of neat and yesterday while browsing at the local McHobbyShop I spotted the Gallery Models LCAC kit in 1/350th scale which got me to thinking about a hovercraft/ACV platform with the same purpose.  I suspect you could combine several to create a large enough surface area to allow a 1/48th scale model to be placed on it or use one of the LCAC models for a 1/72nd scale aircraft subject.  Of course the superstructure would have to be left off in order to make it work.

The other idea I had was to put the pair of LCAC modesl on the underside of a C-130 or C-160 in 1/72nd scale.  That might require a third LCAC in 1/700 scale for the nose gear position but it would certainly look interesting.

Yes indeed!  That is the image I was describing :)

Hmmmm,  Maybe three of the 1/350th scale Gallery Models LCACs would work.  All good since they are sold as a pair in the kit.

That's a Super 4 (a Mk 3....) in the top photo Greg, you can see it's much longer than the Mk 1 in the lower view. I did a few Channel crossings in the APU bay, far right on the exploded view, taking oil samples. It was just a bit noisy..............  :(

If you want a LCAC for a 1/48th aircraft model why not buy the 1/72nd plastic LCAC kit - I think Trumpeter do it but it's rare to see it.

Anyone got any good techniques for making hovercraft skirts?

On small models you can make a Milliput "sausage" and put creases/strips in it when it's semi-dry, but I imagine that wouldn't work (or would at least use vast amounts of Milliput) on something bigger than a few inches across.

They probably wouldn't fit through the car deck doors, but it could certainly lift the weight. Taking the roof off to load them from above might work but the props/engines would limit access a little I'd imagine.

It cries out to be modernized; maybe ducted fans, contra-props or composite propellers.

Of course, converting one as an LCAC(H), the Landing Craft Air Cushion(Heavy) is a natural. I'd just hate to see what type of ship can take one of these in the well deck! Perhaps if you carried them as deck cargo on one of those semi-submersible ships that float-on/float-off cargo.

It's interesting that the Zubr is a couple of feet larger than the SRN4 in all directions.

Perhaps with a PGAC(H), Patrol Gunboar Air Cushion (Heavy), as escort?  Fitted with turreted weapons and some rocket launchers (perhaps one MLRS laucher with spare "six packs" and a couple more launchers for 70 mm rocket pods?), it could do nicely; not quite the same as a Zubr, but along the same lines.  ALternatively, mate a down-sized Zubr with a LCAC?

I built this, the Dragon Hovercraft APC from the Starfist Series.. well my take on it anyway. It is 1/48 using a 1/35 Modern AAV as a basis

I used electrical conduit tube as a basis

To even up the longer tubes with the elbows.. I split more conduit lengthways, cut enough to clip over, then filled with Autofiller to blend it all together
Ended up like this

I'm pleased to say I've travelled on the SRN2 and a couple of SRN5s.

Westland used the SRN2 on the Southsea-Ryde service for a short while in the early 60s at the same time as using the much smaller SRN5s on the same route. The SRN2 was hugely impressive and towered over us even when landed on the gravel beach, and my then wife, then former Mrs_PR19  :), did a film star-like 'turn and wave' at the top of the gangway even though there was no-one seeing us off! The SRN2 was fitted with some very bulbous skirts in service then which I think were the 'fingerless' type and so they lay in canvas heaps alongside the hull and looked most untidy, but I think they had fingers added later on.

The SRN5 was a tiny thing which we boarded over a fold down ramp right in the bow and which actually incorporated part of the windscreen! The SRN5s didn't last very long on that route and were soon replaced by the much larger SRN6s which were just lengthened versions of the SRN5s but had a more versatile control system. On a couple of the SRN5 trips I made the Captain/Pilot had the devil of a job getting the craft lined up with the beach and had to turn away and have another go. I think the SRN6s used Harrier-like ports on the bow to improve their turning ability, and I can't remember any trips on an SRN6 being anything but smooth and straightforward.

They still use hovercraft on the route to this day, indeed the current Mrs_PR19 and I travelled on them earlier this year, but the current craft use DIESEL engines for goodness sake, and almost seem throwbacks, especially after the magnificent SRN2.

[Later] I just looked at JCF's drawings again and noticed the torpedo tube on the SRN3! I've never heard or seen of that idea before but I guess it made a lot of sense. I saw the SRN3 'do it's thing' at an IHTU Hoverday demo at Lee-on-Solent and it was SERIOUSLY impressive! There are some good photos of it in action here  :-
http://www.jameshovercraft.co.uk/hover/srn3/srn3.php

In fact that whole site is a very useful source of hovercraft information.

Unfortunately the skirts don't scale well, the 1/72 LCAC skirts come out too shallow for a 1/35th model,
and you can pretty much forget about the 1/144 LCAC.
:-\

That said the old Airfix 1/144 SR.N4 can be scale-o-rama-ed to a 1/72 machine, maybe 1/48 at a stretch,
but it doesn't look right with a 1/35th tank hull mounted, I know because I put an S-tank hull on the SR.N4
platform/skirt and it just doesn't look right, a turreted tank would be even more off.

If you want, there is a 1/35 hovercraft kit available...that also provides a starting point for whiffing:  the 1/35 Masterpiece Models PACV

Get two of them and you could lengthen it to make an SR.N6.  ;D

Or, you could convert it into a US Army SK-5 Model 7255.

http://1project2far.blogspot.com/2015/05/air-cushion-cavalry-us-armys-bell-sk5.html
Note that the Model 7255s built and deployed (two assault, one transport) didn't get the centerline mounted
power turret shown in the drawing, they had two gunpits with rings, and only a single grenade launcher,
mounted on the port side.

I do note that the Masterpiece kit doesn't appear to have the fingers on the bottom of the skirt.

In Glorious 1/72nd scale.  :o

So I could scale-o-rama it up to 1/35?

Unfortunately the skirts don't scale well, the 1/72 LCAC skirts come out too shallow for a 1/35th model,
and you can pretty much forget about the 1/144 LCAC.
:-\

That said the old Airfix 1/144 SR.N4 can be scale-o-rama-ed to a 1/72 machine, maybe 1/48 at a stretch,
but it doesn't look right with a 1/35th tank hull mounted, I know because I put an S-tank hull on the SR.N4
platform/skirt and it just doesn't look right, a turreted tank would be even more off.
 :-\

In general, people tend to over-load sci-fi hovertanks. They forget that the ratio of hover platform to payload has to be quite large, which is why most hovercraft are, on average, thin and flat, and ones with a non-negotiable heavy centre tend to have a large, flat deck surrounding it.

Yep, the inflated skirt depth is around 1/3, or more, of the total depth.

Stumbled on this:

On May 20, 1972, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) participated in testing Bell Aerospace Canada's hovercraft Voyageur on the Great Lakes and on the Mackenzie River and Beaufort Sea.

I have a plan for a military SR.N4 assault transport.  Anyone know where I can get a 1/144 set of British military vehicles.  Ideally at least 1 Chieftain plus probably some other vehicles.  Some SAMs etc might be good too.

This is probably as close as you'll get for most of it, however no Chieftain, just Challenger:
http://pg-models.co.uk

1/152 (2mm:1') scale.

Found listings for a couple of other Brit machines, Centurion and a Landie, but not much, at least PG has an extensive range.

Chieftain I'm not sure, but Dragon did a 1/144 Challenger (maybe several versions), Warrior and an AS 90.

Scalemates sez Matzo Matuo Kasten do a 1/144 Chieftain. May not be cheap, though.

Yep, HLJ has the Matuo Kasten Chieftain V for ¥3,000.

http://hlj.com/product/MTUAFV-015/Mil

Seems they carry  bunch of 1/144 military veheicles, doesn't appear to be much Brit though.

Thanks guys.  The Challenger, AS90 and Warrior are probably a bit more modern than what I was thinking - I am thinking of a scenario around early '80s (maybe a Falklands or maybe WWIII one).

The Matzo Kasten Chieftain and their similar scaled Salidin might be options:

I am also looking at some Shapeways options...if only to detail the Hovercraft.

Was tempted to add 1 or 2 Sea Wolf SAM launchers:

or maybe a Phalanx:

Maybe some Land Rovers as well:

Generally, the idea is to have a British equivalent to some of the large Russian/Soviet Hovercraft such as the Aist-class:

They probably wouldn't fit Seawolf: it needs loads of electronics volume below decks and has big, heavy fire-control radars.

There's an outfit on ebay called Panzer Depot who do 1/144th armour including a Centurion and a Conqueror: http://stores.ebay.com/Panzer-Depot/1-144-British-AFV-/_i.html?_fsub=1103982014

Fair enough.  Maybe something akin to a multi-round Blowpipe SAM then:

Or perhaps a variant of the SLAM system:

Which was already considered for hover craft application:

Ah, you beat me to it: I'd just come back to suggest Blowpipe. The SLAM system would have been ideal.

It might also have carried the BMARC twin 30mm Oerlikon cannon mount as seen in some of Jon's other postings as well.

Would it be too cheeky to suggest they'd stand a greater chance of hitting the helo with a torpedo than by chucking a Blowpipe at it?  ;D
