I like that enormous cargo wagon! I may have to add it to my supply of post apocalyptic vehicles.

I made a cart for the Arab and donkey, inspired by the image Story posted. The cart is mostly scratchbuilt, with the bottom made from leftover ABS raft material from my filament printer. It's usually waste, but I save all the ABS. The sides are Plastruct ladders and the suspension is scratch. The axle supports are from an RPM FT-17 kit:

I'm building an old Zvezda/Italeri Zil-151 and while I'm thinking about color and adding the last bits, I used it as a platform:

It's not a very big vehicle. The tires are from an old RPM BA-20 kit and the rims/wheels are yet more M113 wheels trimmed to fit:

I may just have the guy riding the donkey to give more space on the cart. I need to add some more bits, including making the yoke and harness.

Great re-use of materials Frank

On proportions, I'm wondering if the poles are too long? In many images of donkey carts, the driver is tucked up much closer to Eeyore's butt.

Frank the model is coming along nicely, but those instructions  :o

Probably the worst I have seen where the pictures look nothing like the model itself. Terrible stuff ;D ;D

Do you want to be that close to a donkey's ass? Compared to Story's reference picture, I should move the poles closer to the donkey's front shoulders. I'm still considering putting the rider o the donkey, since it would simplify construction. The poles would have to be further back, or it would be - ride 5 feet, get hit in the ankles or calf by the poles, repeat...

They look fine to me, Brian. You can see where the front grill attaches to the donkey's ass...
actually, they're poor instructions and in bad shape. I bought the kit on ebay - it had gotten wet in a hurricane and the instructions seem to have taken the brunt of the damage. I found the original on Scalemates... and the undamaged instructions are not an improvement.

There is appears to be quite a bit of science in the placement of the Shafts and the harness, literally thousands of years of accumulated knowledge. Did some quite interesting reading around the interwebnet on that whilst doing my Post Apoc Camel Traders Cart.

Good point ass-wise. Having the rider on the donkey also solves a potential c/g problems (attached).

Still, Brian's "thousands of years of accumulated knowledge" research sounds well worth nerding out on

More than you'll ever want to know about Donkey rigging, with illustrations.

It's like an instruction manual that'll keep the worst rivet counters at bay.

I think this is actually some sort of self-propelled Trebuchet.

That's a good document and I'll use it for reference.

When's the final exam?

I was going to use modified M113 drive wheels that would have looks like the ones on that cart. "Nahhh, too fancy"

FINISHED 1/35 post apocalyptic cart
« Reply #33 on: April 12, 2022, 07:19:58 AM »
I lost steam/interest in the second cart - especially when it came to all the harnesses. So I just finished the cart, donkey and rider.

The cart is mostly scratch built, except for the tires, wheels and the loops at the front. The floor of the cart is some ABS raft from my 3D printer. Handy "junk":

The arab rider looks like Javier Bardem. Here's Javier and his donkey:

They're both pretty much OOB:

I "enhanced" the beard by cutting into the plastic with a fine blade

From 1959;

From the movie "On the Beach" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Beach_(1959_film))

This was the only image I could find of a horse-drawn car from the movie, although the novel, by Neville Shute, refers to them quite a bit.

There are two plastic 2CV kits - Heller in 1/43 and Revell in 1/24. There's a 1/35 2CV in paper: https://www.paperdiorama.com/paper-models/2-cv-collection-vol-4/

I've discovered that I lack the patience for scratch building horse hitches and the skill for paper models...

I was friends with a French researcher at work and one day I thought it would be fun to speak with him in French. He stopped me in the middle of the hallway and asked "Where did you learn French?" I told him I was taught by two Haitian teachers. He said "that explains why you sound like you learned French in the ghetto. Don't speak in French in public..."

Why yes, he's from Paris. Why do you ask?
