Title: Supermarine Walrus - a One Wing Biplane - FINISHED
Post by: robunos on April 18, 2020, 05:58:17 AM

Okay . . . started another one.
This is the 1/72 Revell, ex-Matchbox, Supermarine Walrus kit, which has been looking at me from the bottom of the Stash for longer than I care to remember . . .
First up is assembling the fuselage, a strightforward job. There's some flash, but that's easily dealt with.

Wings next. I'm using the upper wings, because they have the cool cutouts at the root, but mainly, they don't have the huge holes for the landing wheels in them, as I want a pure flying boat . . .

A feature of the Walrus is how far back the wings are mounted on the fuselage. To me, this doesn't look right, so I decided to move them forward, see below. The starboard wing is in the 'correct' position, and the port one is moved forward to a better location.

Love it.  Looking forward to sharing the same hanger with my MS.480 Morse.

Koo Koo Kachoo!  This is not normal your everyday Walrus.  So please do carry on!

Also, Carl, when did you build that shiny beast?  Looks sharp.

The MS.480 destined to be of the 2017 Floaty GB. Not completed in time. Here are the WIP photos. Not sure where the completed ones are.

I'm getting nostalgic here. I may get another Walrus.

Looking to forward to seeing your build completed Robin.

Nice model !   :D  I'm going in the same direction myself, but mine will be closer to the OTL Walrus.

cheers,
Robin.

Nice. Should they not be called flukes and fins?  ;D

Okay . . .
Assembled the engine nacelle today. I assembled the kit parts, drilled out the nose end and filled the strut holes. Then I found a suitable piece to make  the pylon. I think it's a piece of Gladiator wing, but I'm not sure. Also, it's a bit thin, but it will do the job. Trimmed the ends to match the parts where it will fit, and drilled holes for supporting pins.

Glued these together, then when dry, attached to the fuselage, I'd already checked that the propeller wouldn't foul the top decking . . .

Now this one can go for painting . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Oh that matches all expectations! Lovely

I'm not sure Walrus and the word 'svelte' can ever be used in the same sentence. But your one-winged-Walrus is a damned sight sportier than the original  ;D

Good job Robin. Nice of you to correct the original design flaw.   8)

Looks like the perfect natural progression of the Walrus into a monoplane design. Excellent work!

Thanks, gents . . .   :D
I still think the key was moving the wing forward, along with getting the proportion of the engine pylon correct.
When I get the chance, I also need to make a 'beaching trolley', to show it off properly.

cheers,
Robin.

Beauty! Now, what are you going to do with all the wings you have left over from these builds?  ;D ;D
