Title: Wyrmshadow's Assorted Whifs
Post by: Wyrmshadow on May 17, 2012, 02:24:45 PM
Only found the board a week ago. I haven't done much in the way of creative design in many months until recently.

So I thought I'd start off with something I kit bashed together last night.

M1A2 TUSK.. in Euro-Nato woodland cammo instead of the boring desert.

I took many different Abrams models to put it together. Trouble was, the individual authors must have used different plans to work from because nothing lined up between them.

And to think they were selling this terrible model for $68 online. http://www.meshfactory.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_38_42&products_id=309 (http://www.meshfactory.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_38_42&products_id=309)

Did you stick the L55 120mm tube onto it? Or am I just seeing it longer via perspective? Anyway it looks great. If you want to Whif it up change the green for tan and the brown for green and you've got an Australian Army Abrams (or close enough).

That's somewhere down the road if I have some good overall pictures, including top view. I'm not sure about the gun, it's what came with the model, no ID on it.

redress of a Turtledove tank I did a while ago. I tried to enter it into the World of Tanks 'design a german tank' contest but didn't get anything. Frankly the whole contest was a joke. Everything after 2nd place was just ridiculous.

nice stuff, wyrmshadow
like your Crimson Skies planes :)

The "German Tank" looks good for a '46 Panther-III  -- only bad points are the toothed rear-idler / front-sprocket (or is it rear-drive ?) and the turret blocks the driver's & co-ax' hatches.  Turret-basket's a nice touch.
Those Lee / Sherman tanks are the best -- you should also post these in the Land Inspiration thread ! :P

You are correct in all that. By the time I finished it.. I didn't want to mess with it again (3+ years ago). So I thought the turret/hatch issue was minor at the time.

I always wondered what Japanese aircraft would look like in modern day blues. Thank you for that!!  :-*

The HArrier/A-4 combo is still great. Even better when I remember how they merged the A-4 and Harrier communities years back.

I really like that HarrierHawk :)

I do, too, and it would be doable with a version of the "straight-thru" Pegasus derivative that Rolls-Bristol studied for another purpose (hint: it burned hydrogen because the vehicle in question was already plumbed to use it for fuel).

Wow, haven't posted here in six months.

Anyway, recently I animated the AMX-30 for the game CivilizationIII. I thought it looked generic enough that it didn't look Eastern or Western, just generic and gave it camos from a lot of countries. Bet you've never seen it like this.
In case you need map for the camo patterns:

German Ambush, Arab(Iraqi lion of Babylon) yellow, Australia
Chinese BMP-1, Denmark Leo2, German Leo2
Iranian BMP-1, Japan, Modern Russian
Swedish Leo2, United Nations, speculative african woodland.. literally the woodland uniform pattern on a tank.
Argentina, French Brenus, Chilean
Desert, French AMX-30 B2, Greek
Green, Indian T-90, speculative North African Mahgreb
Spanish Leo2E, US Woodland, Venezuela

Sometimes I like to make my tanks in multiple  colors.. normally some camo, green and desert. But this time I went a little overboard.

So Blue Ridge has a 1/700 Arsenal Ship in the works huh???!!!  YIPPEE!!!!  The 3-D printer is just for the master right?  Large scale prints on those things are EXPENSIVE!!

I assume you've seen these drawings correct?  Scaled drawings from Lockheed for their version.

I seem to be having a hard time posting again.

I'm back to work.

Story: Last year I was running out of room on my computer for all my work so I bought a new 2TB drive to use as a new main and consolidate the majority of my files. 2 months later it failed and took nearly everything with it. All my art tools, my movies, and much much more that you can fill up a two terabytes with. I did not lose my 3d programs or files, but I did lose most everything else, including the reason why I got the new drive in the 1st place.. space. That was last April and I had not done anything creative since then. Add to that the usual real life issues that become road blocks that everyone faces so no need to share.

Last week I sorta got my old drive working. The drive didn't die, it slowed to a crawl. It would take 1 day to copy over a GB of data. One of the first things I was able to save was my art tools. This week I'm on vacation and I spent 12 solid hours doing what I had not been able to do for a year... ART!

half the time was spend finishing up this beauty. My Tupolev Black Bear. Now fully textured after 3 years of nothing.

Good to have you back…and with some classics! :)

I really like the Black Bear.  It looks much better than the crude drawing I did a while back:

Up all night doing some different camos for my Blackbear model.

starting from top left to right and on down.

Row 1. prototype paint taken from the 3rd T-50 PAKFA fighter.     Standard navy colors from Backfire in naval strike.
Row 2. Black naval taken from Su-34                                             No paint all metal finish
Row 3. Frontal aviation Su-24 Fencer                                            1st PAKFA prototype paint
Row 4. just for shits and giggles, Vietnam era B-52 paint.

I haven't been here in ages. Nothing new in quite a long long while.

Well, who doesn't like to refight WW2 with modern ideas?

I took a German WW2 armored scoutcar and turned it into a 8 wheel APC platform. When I was taking measurements using a 2m man, I discovered it was too small for my purposes. I had to double the volume.

The versions I've done are a standard APC armed with a 50 cal M2 BMG and a 30 cal.
Next is the same armament but in a turret.
Then with a M8 greyhound turret that has a 37mm gun and 30 cal.
Next to that I used a M22 locust turret, virtually the same thing as before but I added 4 bazooka tubes. Yes, that's right. I made a WW2 LAV. To reload the bazookas under fire I put in a roof hatch.
Next is a Fire Support version with a M8 Scot turret. It ahs a short barreled 75mm howitzer.
Last in the line is a 75mm Ant-Tank cannon version.

I did not make a artillery version or MLRS. The arty would screw up the shocks. I have other plans for both.

I felt I needed to show the size difference with my APC and it's progenitor. I kept the shape but doubled the internal size and stretched out the back. I added the BTR-80 to show a modern comparison for scale.

a walkaround. It's still simple, but I made it so people can fit inside. Room for 4 men on the bench with zero headroom.

This is very cool. What are the actual size differences between your concept ('Mannschaftstransportwagen 8 Rad'?) and the historical Sd.Kfz.231 or '232 Schwerer Panzerspähwagen?

I'm wondering about a styrene scale-o-rama. For example, if one started with the old, 1/32 Monogram/Revell Sd.Kfz.232 kit (#85-7856) and re-scaled for 1/35. That would take you from a RW length of 5.9 m to just over 6.45 m. Not a big difference ... but enough to go from Schwerer Panzerspähwagen to MTW?

My measurements are for the Original 6.739m x 2.91m 2.268m   LWH
My update is 8.657m x 3.058m x 3.458m

according to my program.

Another idea. A cross between a M3 and a Ba10 armored car.

This has a stretched engine compartment. Larger wheels to go along with the 8 wheel APC I made. M8 GMC Scott turret but I used a Hellcat's 76mm instead of the short howitzer. This is a cavalry escort and tank hunter for the wheeled formations.

I also tried to build a VF-1 Valkyrie using real world plane parts. A true kitbash. I think a brilliant move was using a F-111 nose, but squished in half so it's a single seater instead of tandem.

This one was a brainstorm for a while for me. I spent most of 2 days working on it.

It's a mixture of a De Havilland Dragon Rapide small airliner body, two P-40 engines, E-2 Hawkeye tail and a Kamov style dual rotor setup with a pusher prop.

This goes with my other WW2 reimagined hardware. As for size, the cabin same width as a UH-1 Huey, but looks much beefier. I wanted to make a troop carrying helicopter for WW2 but all the contemporary designs were very flimsy and primitive. Sikorski's stuff barely got off the ground. Jet engines are too far off technologically so they can't be turboshaft engines, instead I'm using piston engines readily available. Normally it's a radial engine in helos but I chose instead to use the Allison in-line engine from the P-40 Warhawk. The arrangement is similar to the CH-37 Mojave transport helicopter. The Mojave was a massive 1950s helicopter that used two huge outboard pods to house the twin Wasp radial engines to power the rotor blades. I chose to use an inline design and each engine powers one rotor. 1200 hp per rotor is a lot of lifting power. Early helicopter prototypes in 1943 used 185 hp engine. The dual rotor Kamov style design negates the use of a tail rotor for rotation and to counteract the yaw from the main rotor blades. The pusher in the back makes it look like today's Sikorski Defiant attack helicopter prototype. The propellers for the two engines were removed and I replaced them with radiators.

The Landing gear is fixed. I'm not smart enough to design a housing to for them to be retractable, yet.

Maybe next I'll make a H-5 gunship.

Direct comparison with the Chinook. It's roomier in the Chinook and those turbines provide a lot more power.

I made a jet version of the XP-67 Moonbat.

I gave it J47 turbojets and had to redo the engine cowlings. I also added 4 20mm and 2 30mm cannons instead of the projected 6 37mm cannons. The greenhouse canopy was replaced with an enlarged Mustange bubble canopy.

After a little research, the J47's would weight 1000 pounds more than the engines I wanted to replace.

If I tried to modify what I already have, that would be extremely hard. I would need to make/find a new set of wings and engine pods. And that would radically change the look of it and it's not what I want. A swept wing version would look similar to a swept wing Me262 with the engines buried in the fuselage.
Title: Re: Wyrmshadow's Assorted Whifs

As you can see the J47's are very large and so I need to redo the landing gear to fold inward up against the wing instead of inside the engine nacelle.

I've been doing some Kriegsmarine aviation. The bombers and torpedo planes textures are not done. The Fighters are. This is 2 Toni Naval fighters with the standard Emil model in front. Only difference with the T has a wider wingspan and arrestor gear. Hard to tell from this angle.

And this is me attempting to pick up something I dropped in 2009. Naval Stuka work in progress. Basically done, I still need to flesh out the textures.

Hmm, a German "hose-nose".  What engine - a 4-row double-BMW-801 ?

I don't remember what the donor aircraft model was but it's 2 rows of 7 cylinders. The measurements are 1.1M in diameter and 0.5m in length. A BMW 801 would look huge on this plane. It would turn it from a hose-nose to a droop snoot.

EDIT: I just did a check with a Ju-88 model vs this ship. It would only make the cowling .5 meters longer and slightly narrower for some reason.

The maximum cargo payload of the commercial L-1049D could carry 36,916 lbs (16,745 kg) payload Max payload

I took that as my maximum effort war load for the B-30. I measured out my bombs by dimensions and split them between 2 bomb bays. I made the forward bay just large enough to carry the T10 Tallboy bomb.
When I did my math wrong, I figured I could cram in twice as many 500 and thousand pound bombs if I used the middle of the bay but that would make it far too heavy to even take off.

4,940 mi (7,950 km, 4,290 nmi) with 19,500 lb (8,845 kg) payload
6,180 mi (5,370 nmi; 9,946 km) with 8,000 lb (3,629 kg) payload

64 x 500 pound 32,000 pound load

30 x 1000 pound  30,000 pound load

16 x 2000 pound  32,000 pound load

1 x ASM-A-1 Tarzon Guided bomb 13,0000 pound load

1 x T10 Tallboy 12,000 pound load

Something I've wanted to make for many years just to fill in some gaps in my Kriegsmarine aviation units. The Fieseler Fi 167 Torpedo bomber.

You got it right on the nose, pun intended. I did use a B-17 nose but decided not to use the chin turret. I wanted to keep the lines clean and it already had a 4 quad turrets from the B-29. If you wanted to do this in plastic, you'd need a lot of putty to make the joint smooth. The B-17's nose is quite a bit more narrow than the Connie.

Yes, the C-54 nose was resized to fit the C-130 and I modified the windows to be smaller. As a child, I never liked the greenhouse of a Hercules flight deck. Just a personal preference.

This one wasn't very quick.  It's a AC-47 Spooky, but in WW2. My AC-47 is armed with two Quad 50 caliber machine guns, two 20mm Oerlikon cannons and a shortened 75mm howitzer in the back. I was unable to fit 40mm Bofors guns in this small fuselage, I tried. It's all aimed using the remote sighting system of the B-29 in those little glass bubbles.

It's not a Spooky or Puff the Magic Dragon.

It's a Tomahawk.

I had been brain storming on how to make a a 2 seater helicopter canopy and still make it look WW2 era and NOT anything like an Apache or Cobra or even HIND. At first I tried to make it a stepped cockpit using a blocky design like the Me-109 but it looked too much like the Mi-28. So in the end I used a OV-10 Bronco. Add 2 Merlins from a P-51 and then stub wings inspired by Japanese anime. Each wings contain a dozen M8 artillery rockets arranged in Helfire quad racks. The guns are 4 Hispano-Suiza 20mm on each side and a quad 50cal turret from a B-29.

What do you think so far?

Looks great! Some nice Cheyenne vibe there. Personally I would reduce some of the armament but it’s your idea so go for it.

Yes, the Cheyenne was always in the back of my mind. I had a 3d model somewhere but I was unable to find it.

M-13 Picket family of armored vehicles.

Introducing the M-13 Picket family of armed fighting vehicles.

The main hull of this APC started out as the soviet MTLB. I liked the overall look of it but it had some drawbacks. It was very cramped so I made it a lot deeper. I also changed the suspension to use M4 Sherman Volute Spring bogies because this is a WW2 era design. I also had to redo a lot of small things like give it American style radio antennae, viewports and headlights. Small things. Biggest change was I removed the 2 rear doors and replaced it with one large M113 style hatch.

Front row, closest to camera is the standard APC version.
It could carry 8 fully armed soldiers and a maximum of 4 more in the vehicle. 1 in the turret and 3 more in the drivers compartment.
This carried the turret from the M1 scout car with a single M2 Browning 50 cal HMG and a M1919 30 cal machine gun.

Next furthest is the Infantry Fighting Vehicle version.
The turret used is from the M22 Locust light tank. It has a 37mm M6 cannon and 30 cal. Additionally it has 4 external M20 "super" bazooka barrels.

Furthest away in the front row is a 2nd IFV version.
This uses a modified M3 Lee turret. The 37mm cannon is replaced with a 20mm Oerlikon autocannon firing AP and a 30 cal coax.

Back row has a Fire Support Vehicle, Rocket Launcher and AA Mount.

The FSV turret houses a short barreled 75mm howitzer.

The Rocket launcher contains 33 M8 artillery rockets

Last vehicle contains the M16 AAA mount with four 50 cal M2 HMG.

The VVSS and HVSS systems used by the US were actually rather brilliant, standardized components,
easily maintained and, best of all, easily replaced when damaged. Was it a perfect system compared
to torsion bar, and similar systems, in terms of cross-country performance etc.? No, but it sure made
things easy on the logistics side and allowed for quick experimentation and modification, all you needed
was a "box" to mount it on. The M4 High Speed Tractor is a good example as it used the suspension
assemblies and tracks from the Stuart tank mounted to a new hull.

I chose the VVSS instead of a modern torsion bar because it saved room in the tiny hull. Not the 'best' system, but it had many bonuses. I can make the belly more protected against mines without having to worry about torsion bars running across it.

Here's a SPG version I made with an enlarged Sherman turret. I had to cut down a lot of the 105mm to make it fit. I took it from a M7 Priest model, lengthened the barrel and added a muzzle brake. It's a tight fit in the turret, so ROF would be lower than the open top of the Priest.

Title: Re: Wyrmshadow's Assorted Whifs

The hull is a Ruski MTLb so I think the engine is still mid-mounted.

This should help illustrate things. The hull is transparent while the white crew and driving compartments and the blue engine area are not. Purely my own conjecture, not sure if that's how the real thing looks like.

The smaller green one is the Ordnance Quick Firing 6-pounder Anti-Tank Gun. In US service it was called the 57mm Gun M1. It was the standard towed AT gun for a long while during WW2 on the Allied side. I think they should have had something bigger even than the 17 pounder. So I upscaled a 75mm barrel from a Hellcat to 90mm and added a muzzle brake from a Sherman E8. The gunshield is from a 75mm AT gun on a M3 halftrack that I modified. The wheels are the giant truck wheels I'm using as standard on my wheeled units. The rest of the chassis is a combination of the 105mm artillery and a german PAK40.

The big truck wheels are .863m in diameter by .177m in width.

No for 2 reason. WW2 UK 3d models are few and far between. So I'm not messing with them.
Also, UK designs from that era won't win any beauty contests, so I'm definitely not touching them.

Two additional designs under test and development were the 105mm Anti-Tank Gun T8 on carriage T19 and the 105mm Anti-Tank Gun T8 on carriage T17.
Both weapons are listed under this Wikipedia entry: 105mm Anti-Tank Gun T8 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/105_mm_gun_T8)
The T8 on carriage T17 looks to be quite innovative while the T8 on carriage T19 looks more traditional and the spoked wheels are reminiscent of a German PaK ATG

Hot Dog. We have a wiener.

Yes. A WW2 Warthog. I found detailed model and I spent many hours trying to de-futurize it. I of course, gave it a M35 face. Then I went about and changed a lot of the super futuristic stylings of the boxes and suspension, dashboard. Everything I could.

Sad to say that I am more familiar with the HALO Warthog than I would care to be.  I acquired four of the Revell Snap-Kit Warthogs that are touted as being "1/32nd scale" but a much closer to being 1/24th or 1/25th scale when you place a 1/32nd or 1/35th scale figure anywhere near the model.  To make matters worse, I inadvertently threw away the clear parts for the initial four Warthog kits [kits are boxed in clear plastic trays within the shoddy side opening box and easily missed] so I ended up acquiring four more of the damned things so I could complete the first four kits.  This gave me four additional Warthogs that I have been modifying to remove the problematic hole in the cargo bed by covering it over with a new floor.  The figures and stupid noise-making weapons were all donated and are not missed.

M40 Boarhound. Because it's not a Warthog. It's the total opposite. It's the Anti-Warthog.. Therefore it's a hound that hunts hogs.

Not posted in a while. There is a new game on STEAM that just dropped this week called FLYOUT.

You design and fly your own planes and helicopters. It's very difficult and there is a learning curve. The hardest part for me is learning how to design a piston engine. I don't understand fuel mixes and gear ratios so when I go to test it, there is very little power. My first 3 planes looked pretty, but could not fly. Yesterday I tried to make my WW2 Autogyro. After 2 hours of fiddling with the stats, it flew! I can hover, but the push prop is very weak. Only managed to go 75mph forward. The two engines are Allisons from a P-40. The bore diameter, stroke, and number of pistons is correct, but I had to guess on the gear radios to make it work. Lots and lots of guess work.

I'd suggest half your problem is blade length/number.

Looking at how close to the fuselage those engines are the prop's must be really short!

To get any thrust out of them you'll need to either move them much further out or fit 5 or 6 blades to the propeller - probably similar to short versions of the square-tipped Mustang blades.

It's a pusher prop in the back. There is nothing attached to the engine nacelles. I did increase the blade length and that helped a little. At the moment it's really back heavy. I have to trim the pitch a lot.

Okay ... so those podded engines shaft-drive both the contra-rotating rotors and the compound pusher prop?

Yes. This was my 3D rendered version from last year.
