Just a place holder at the moment.
Basically I'm going to turn a Miles Magister into a gyrocopter prototype for maritime sub spotting and search and rescue. I also have a story/back story in my head that I may be able to prise out.
I may not be able to finish this one on time as Mrs Mog and I are reactivating the cat rescue shed to take in a couple of Ukrainian refugee cats. (Our house is way too small to offer sanctuary to people so this is the next best thing).
Time will tell.

With the fuselage mocked up, ive started to turn the wing stubs into sponsons also I found a white metal scarfe ring and Lewis Gun in the parts box that I thought would be a nice edition. I feel there is going to be some PSR to come.

The image of the instrument panel shows the grip of the control stick, on all of the direct control
autogiros the control stick is attached to the rotor-hub, which you can see clearly in the photo
of the rotor system.

Maybe a first stab at the Weir W.6 design is single-rotored. Then, James Weir decides instead to refine his twin-rotored W.5 of 1938. This enlarged W.6 (II) design was more in line with Heinrich Focke's 1936 Fw 61 (later Focke-Achgelis Fa 61). When George Miles of Miles Aircraft made inquiries at Cathcart about the Autodynamic Rotor Head, James Weir was happy to sell Miles the rights.
Once FG Miles approved the sale, Maxine 'Blossom' Miles undertook the redesign of an M.14 Hawk Trainer III airframe to accept the ARH. Initially, known as the M.14G, the autogyro was later redesigned G.1 (in Miles Aircraft's new 'G for Gyro' category) and renamed Gyromagister (to be in line with the rebranding of the fixed-wing M.14 trainer).
As for the second incarnation of the W.6, the outbreak of WW2 ended its development. Plans for producing W.6s at Abbotsinch were finally abandoned for good in 1940.

Hi all,
Some more progress made.
I decided that the nose was a little short so I've extended it about a quarter of an inch which also makes transitioning from an oval to a circular cross section much easier.

I took a closer look at the engine and found it to be, well, a bit "rotary" and to make it more "radial" I have added push rods to the front and I am currently bending some plastic rod to form a collector ring.
That funny construction in the bottom left hand corner will eventually become the head of the rotor mast.
The white platform is a template for the Scarfe Ring allowing me to build up the sides without damaging the white metal component it is lightly glued in place and will be cut off when the construction is complete.
Currently deciding whether to place the rotor mast over the front cockpit or just in front of it. A toss up between practicality and aesthetics ;D

Pitcairn PA-39 placed the rotor head directly over the fwd. cockpit.

Kellet used a streamlined mast that put the rotor-head just ahead of the fwd. cockpit.

Jon : - yea I think thats the way to go, the Cierva C30 also straddled the front cockpit with the pilot in the rear seat but I can rework it for a front seat pilot. :smiley:

It still needs a little more sanding but is essentially complete. I'm very happy with the result
As I have lost the fuel tanks In the wings I've installed a large belly tank under the pilots to give it some range.

It is curious that you chip away at a kit bash and it seems to be taking ages then suddenly "whumph" most of the construction is done and its ready for the paint shop.

The Miles G1 Autogyro
When George Miles of Miles Aircraft made inquiries at Cathcart about the Autodynamic Rotor Head, James Weir was happy to sell Miles the rights.⁹
Once FG Miles approved the sale, Maxine 'Blossom' Miles undertook the redesign of an M.14 Hawk Trainer III airframe to accept the ARH. Initially, known as the M.14G, the autogyro was later redesigned G.1 (in Miles Aircraft's new 'G for Gyro' category) and renamed Gyromagister (to be in line with the rebranding of the fixed-wing M.14 trainer).
By then war was imminent it was obvious to Miles that there was going to be a lack of maritime patrol aircraft which led to the design being radically altered, exchanging the existing Gypsy engine for a more powerful radial, increasing the number of rotor blades to three and fitting a large fuel tank under the pilots seats gave the aircraft increased range and duration plus the ability to carry 300 pounds of ordinance.
The ordinance consisted a combination of 100 pound anti submarine bombs and droppable life rafts on four hard points either side of the fuel tank.
Tests showed that the Gyromagister had excellent handling and range and could drop its payload reasonably accurately by hovering into wind. However, despite its strong construction, it was very much at the mercy of the English weather, when compared to conventional aircraft, and when it was found that the anti submarine bombs were less than useless against their intended target it was decided to cancel the the project so as not to interrupt existing production lines.
The only example of this aircraft was thought to have been stored for a while then subsequently scrapped.
However there was a rumour at this time that the Gyromagister had been brought out of store and fitted with new bomb racks that could hold eight small bombs in preparation for a possible invasion of the UK, and was actually used in anger.
This has been refuted by aviation experts but the rumour still persists to this day........

Frank :- yea it is longer than intended, I got carried away when I was contouring the nose and didn't take into account the depth of the engine/propeller. :-\
But Still it does make it look a lot more elegant compared to other autogyros ;D
