Title: MPC's Monza S - OOB Mega-Loser!
Post by: Faust on March 17, 2022, 09:01:24 AM
A friend and reader messaged me a while ago and asked what had happened to my losers. I mean, everyone knows I love loser cars, but I had drifted a bit away of late. I had a good influx of WWII planes and especially those that float, and I’ve gotten into Brass Era stuff a lot more lately. To be honest, I’d not even noticed my “loser output” had fallen! I promised him that I’d redeem myself before spring, and I’m here today to do just that.

Because, when you want to show you’re strong with the Losers, you can’t just show up with anything. You can’t just bring a ’79 Mustang to a Mustang II fight. No. You have to go WAY stronger. You have to go beyond loser, beyond econobox… you have to BECOME shameless badge engineering and parts-bin commonality.

And what, dear friends, could exemplify this more than the 1978 MPC Chevy Sportback?? The Monza S was a Vega body with a Monza nose, and the kit is just a Vega Promo with a Monza nose. It’s genius, it’s cheekiness and it’s completely cheap and dirty, malaise-era corner-cutting at both 1:1 and 1:25 scales!

While a low-production losermobile isn't something I'd normally pose on a What-If board, I do feel this has a lot of potential. This is, as far as I know, the only way to get the 'less sporty' or 'more formal' Monza nose in kit form. If you've got other styles of Vega-class models, you could "Monza them up" with this thing, or create your own small Chevy from the kit. It has interesting potential for customizations other than the chest hair-baring, porn-staching, sunset-striped dragster shown on the box.

Oh dude sweet... I genuinely love a lot of that era of American automobile, probably for having grown up with them as part of my childhood environment. Kinda makes me wonder whether there are kits for a Pontiac Astre or Ford Maverick...

Truly , a nice era.  I want to model a 69 Camero on its roof (Bathurst) ;D

But really I want a '74 AMC Matador (drove like a fat whale in a storm) & an AMC Javelin :icon_fsm:

Don't know about those but kits of some of my dads cars from my childhood would be great.

The beauty of those mid- to late-'70s American econoboxes is 'weathering' potential.

Among those who remember the era, who can forget the railroad-tie bumpered '75 Vega pocked with rust spots straight from the factory! Oh boy, those were the days ...

** Riley Pathfinder **  yes please, a friend of my dad had 3 of these + a Citroen DS-21 "Godess".   Only problem with the Pathfinder was the silly placement of the gearstick !
