As the Priest SPG was retired from Commonwealth service, some were set up as Armoured Personel Carriers and others lanquised in depots. Looking at their roomy interior once the gun was removed, some thought was given to using the chassis for a Engineer vehicle.
This vehicle ended up being the forerunner of the Current Combat Engineer Tractor used by the UK forces.

So like Claymore some digging round revealed and old (and horrible) Italeri Priest that was beginning to undergo the conversion to a Kangaroo APC. It was so horrid it got shelved.

The plan is an enclosed vehicle with a bucket and/or interchangeable dozer blade
So a session with the plastic card gets me to here

A lot of tidy up to do and final fittings such as a trip to a $2 shop to get a toy loader for a bucket

That Combat Engineer Tractor sure resembles a Sherman hull.

Don't you hate when you see something like diggers, graders etc in $2 shop a couple of years back and now nada

So had to go down the "build your own" path and dig out the plastic card. Again.

Just a quick update of where we are at after tonights session
Added on the bucket/blade.
Extended rear deck housing for the hydraulic auxillary engine where one of the bins was.

next is getting the welds on by using a hot knife tool on the sprue you can see. Not the most realistic method but good enough for this kind of build.

Well this has just zoomed ahead, the mojo must be in the zone

The result of the hot knife weld work. Not as good as the epoxy putty but for this type of build, it does the trick

Well this is pretty much it before paint

A conversion like this on real vehicles may have extended the life of the chassis by quite a few years. Not to mention the value of this type of
enclosed superstructure for Command Vehicle functions.

Now that we see it made flesh, as it were, it is difficult to fathom why such a practical design was not made for real.

Calling this done.

The British Engineer Vehicle Mk1 know to the troops as the BEVVY. A rebuild of Priest SP guns that were replaced by Sexton SP guns in NWE Theater. Removing the gun and adding an extension to the Front of the fighting compartment to improve forward visibility and a covered top for overhead protection. This Type of Engineer Vehicle went on to serve well into the 60's in Territorial units until finally replaced by the much updated Combat Engineer Tractor in the late 70's.
