Kerick's RF-101
« on: April 01, 2015, 10:43:57 AM »
Here is my extended life entry. A Hasegawa RF-101 with a new nose from an old Micro Scale decal sheet with conversion parts for an F-101A or C.

I added an F-15 fuel tank on the centerline, F-4 wing pylons, a scratch made gun port and F-18 style LEXs.

I added an IR sensor above the nose and another sensor under the nose, F-4 style.

I'll add J79 exhaust nozzles and an F-15 style paint job and markings. Also Sidewinders and either Sparrows or Slammers on the pylons. Now I just have to finish it!

Very good sir. Maybe add some small canards to mitigate the pitch-up problem?
Work in progress ::

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

And there it is, the exact type and location of twin rail missile rails I was just speculating would look great on a BAC Lightning.  Top job, I can't wait to see the end result.

I broke this out to its own build thread, just a little moderator housekeeping. Nothing to see here, move along. Move along.

I've been searching for small bits to add. I'm adding an arrestor hook and I added an attachment point for that. Searching the parts box for canards and pitot sensors. Extra antennas of course.

Now that the Sukoi/Republic SU-105 is finished I can concentrate on the F-101. I think I'll call it the F-101E. It was a RW J79 powered version that never went into production.

Added canards and a couple of details to the Voodoo. I found another pen like the one I used to make the afterburner cans so now I can make them longer. Fooling around with the idea of adding LGBs. Maybe a Pave Penny pod.

Canards turned out well.

The first attempt is on the left but I found the tails from two 1/350th S-3 Viking. Looks much better.

Longer afterburner cans for the J79s. Nozzels are from a Hasegawa F-4.

The canards look perfect.  Nicely done.

What paint scheme are you considering?

Thanks!
Colors will be F-15 style with light ghost gray and dark ghost gray. I have to search the decal stash for something that won't fall apart.

Some paint! My attempt at Compass Ghost scheme adapted to an F-101E. I used Model Master light ghost grey and dark ghost grey.

Only problem was the paints were drying so quickly it made it difficult to prevent overlap marks. I work in the basement and it was cool and dry.
On to the decals and fiddly bits!

I've been working on the decals all weekend. I put on several and let them dry then do more so I don't mess up the ones I already put on. I'm using a mix of A-10 and F-16 sheets with slime lights from and F-4 sheet. Most are Micro Scale of various vintages.

I went for a slightly updated variation on the 60's style of markings. Black stars and bars smaller than the huge ones used on early F-101s yet not as small as modern ones. I kept the US Air Force on the sides and the USAF above and below the wings. The shark mouth is from an A-10 sheet and I seriously considered using it on the SU-105. I think it looks darn good here. Next step is dull coat and lots of little parts and paint touch up.
Hardest part was figuring out which decals from which sheets to use.
