Let's not forget both the MB.326 and MB.339 spawned single seat versions, although only the MB.326K was successful:

Speaking of which, does anyone know of a kit or a conversion to do a MB.339K?  In 1/48!!!

Don't know about 1/48th, but Supermodel did an MB.339K in 1/72nd. Presumably Italeri hold the molds for it , but they never seem to have put it out under their own name, so it's rare as hen's teeth now.

Rickshaw, I have to agree with you.  When I saw the rego on the Veltro II I chuckled.  With the MB.339, Aermacchi has shown a definite "touch" with registrations (all the early prototypes had registrations that were differently languages words for "nine").

BTW, the MB.339K looks to have the same cannon fit and bulges as the MB.326K, you might consider starting with those two to kit-bash a MB.339K.

One decal set I wish was available was for the MB.326D which was a small run of conversion trainers for Alitalia and flew in a version of their standard markings of the period.  They were later transferred to the AMI when they'd served their role with the airline. If it's not asking too much, I'll take such a set in either 1/48 or 1/72 or both.

I built an upgraded Impala 1 of the Zimbabwean AF as a Vampire replacement. it had a fuel tank in the rear seat, scabbed on armour,
an extended jet pipenand chaff/flare launchers.

What about some Yugoslav license production?

The MB-326 and the SOKO G-2 Galeb were in development and entered service in about the same time frame. All that's really needed is a reason for the G-2 to be cancelled; a rash of accidents in the development phases perhaps?

Both aircraft were intended to replace the T-33, so it would make sense for Yugoslavia to try getting a license for 326 production if the G-2 didn't work out.

The canopy strengthening frame is a bit of Tamia tape which is exactly the right colour. But was a Aussi mod. You can just see the scabbed on armour along the cockpit in this shot. It was supposed to be "rougher" and more Russian in appearance. But I settled on the less is more thing. (Thanks to SWMBO for the use of the Kindle)

Which is where the idea came from.
The backstory is the Rhodesian Vampires had stress problems in the hot bumpy low level ops, and wing spars failed.
The RSA didn't have enough Impala 2s to spare. So a small number of trainers were donated to Rhodesia where they
were modified for the COIN role. The model is of one of the few survivors post war in the AFZ.
The model is the Italeri 1/72nd kit.

How about giving the 339 an extended nose with a radar in it?

You mean like the proposed MB.326C?  Here's a "massaged" photo of the mock-up they made:

It was intended as a radar trainer for the F-104.

Not in that vein, more like the Hawk 200 or the Aero L-159 ALCA. The radar would be for the aircraft's own missions, not as  a training aid for a different type.

Certainly not a bug pointy schnoz like that. That looks like someone tried to stick a Yak-28 on the front of the 326.

So, rather than something like a MB.326K or MB.339K where the cannon magazines replace the rear seat, you'd keep the rear seat and go with a modified nose to house a radar?  I could see that.  On the other hand, I wonder how a blend of MB.326C and MB.326K would look with a good radar, for the time, in the nose, a single seat, and dual cannon?

Possibly like the L-159, with single seat and a dedicated two seat trainer variant:

The single seater could have avionics or cannon magazines.

After a first thumb-through of Volume 2 of Meggs' series, I keep thinking of a MB362KH single-seat strike aircraft supporting Australian ground troops.  I can see several options for what service operates it and what camouflage scheme it carries.

An interesting question would be what cannons would be used.  The MB326K was designed with DEFA cannons but ADENs could just as easily be used (ISTR that both are very similar).  It would probably boil down to which would have the least impact on the logistics train.  The Avon-Sabre used ADENs while the Mirage used DEFAs, so I could see either being used.
