HS Trident and Dassault Mercure shared the same drawback: low range. So, why not external fuel tanks as a "quick and dirty" solution?

Look at Mercure's tail fin. Does it have a resemblance to Mirage-2000's?

What if Iberia managed to get Mercure as a part of the spanish idylle with Marcel Dassault in early 70s.
