In progress: Hobbyboss SeaHawk 1:72nd
« on: January 17, 2012, 12:46:16 AM »
Since the other builds went down well i thought you might like to see the current builds progress.

top and bottom are together now preshading started..

Closeup of the cockpit.. Apart from some foil straps its all OTB...

Gluing the top and bottom together left a odd gap along the rear of the wing so it was filled and reshaped:

Before

After

Rear end attached, preshaded and underside painted

Underside.. Tail planes are being sprayed seperately so they dont get in the way...

Can anyone spot the masking fail ? lol

Thankyou very much though :)

It may not have seemed like much to you, Chris, but it sure looks every bit the business to me!

I find detailing very challenging which is one of the reasons I work in smaller scales.

Ok i promised a update... Due to forces out of my control i didnt get much done but...

Masked up for the upper surfaces:

After the overspray issues earlier i was taking no chances with the underside....

But all in all it came out well ! :)

Oddly the masking managed to rub a lil paint off just behind the cockpit as you can see here.. But nothing that cant be very easily fixed...

...Now how to go about the weathering... Choices choices....   ???

So did anyone notice the mistake i've had to spend all day fixing !? Yep i WAS going to decal today only to discover id forgotten that the upper colour lips over the bottom by about half a cm on the leading edge... And i'd done such a good job masking up a sharp line down the wings...

Maybe decalling tomorrow instead... :/  lol

I have to agree with BdB, that cockpit really looks sharp   :)

Does the Hobbyboss kit come with a seperate rear fuselage then ? is there a choice of tails or something like that ?

Yes the rear is separate as you can see in the first few pics as for different tails the answer is sort of... Theres only one in the box but it allows them to make the German one in a different box by just changing to the taller tail...

Following this Seahawk build is like watching a how to do it show.
Cockpit is looking so good and upper lower color break is right on.
Nose back including intakes looks like a Venom.  Might handle Venom wings OK after smoothing out beginning of tail booms.

It would involve a fair amount of cutting though... This kit the entire top side and bottom side are big pieces... The fusalage and wing is all one piece... If i WAS going to swop the wings i might use the Airfix kit instead.. The wings are separate and its rubbish anyway so you might as well cut it up for whiff :D

Disaster !... Well at least an oh bugger...

I said i still had plenty of problems and now ive found one, starting decaling as you guys have really inspired me to crack on... And i encountered a problem im not sure how to fix :(

Yep.. The decals are WAYYY too thin.. And the seagrey is showing through the white... Which means problems for all the roundells AND the diamonds on the front... Hmm plenty of ways i COULD fix it but not sure which is best :/

Any recommendations ?  please ?   lol

That'd be my first approach too. Now that you know, you may be able to find some white or yellow sections of spare decals you can cut to shape for under the others.

Good luck!

You're very patient, Chris. Far more patient than I am. If I had that problem, I'd probably risk it and try to paint over the places where the the colors show through by hand.

What I've done in the past is to use a mask to paint a white circle VERY slightly smaller than the decal, then put the decal over it. Pain to do, but it does work.

That was one option... Only my circular masking isnt good... Straight lines i can do... Circles not so much :(

Me neither, so what I did was this:

1. Stick a piece of 18mm Tamiya tape to a piece of glass

2. Cut out the circle using a circle-cutter with a FRESH blade

3. Stick another piece of Tamiya tape over the first one to act as a "carrier" and preserve the circular shape. Make sure that the top piece of tape has "tabs" so that you can separate it from the bottom one again.

4. Peel both pieces of tape off the glass and apply to the model

5. Peel off the top piece of tape to leave a perfectly circular mask on the model

Chris, it might be easier to paint the roundels on blank decal paper so you can have multiple attempts without worrying about possible mistakes directly on the model.

It's a real treat to see this one come together, Chris!

I can't speak specifically to Seahawks, but in general, there might be leaks of hydraulic fluid near the landing gear, flaps and speedbrakes. Perhaps a little jetfuel on the ground tarmac where it could've spilled if groundcrew weren't careful with the hose.

Hope this helps,

After much talk on more JMN forums than this... The upper serials have now been removed... Despite the instructions saying i should have serials on both the underside AND top of the wings... Apparently this made the JMN's angry... As this is wrong... oops lol

Right managed to take a few pics tonight to give you an idea...

Under carriage bits :

Flory models dark dirt wash wiped off completely only just showing off the panel lines and no more.. Note damaged roundel  :icon_twisted: Must try photos again after another touch up :

Upper side showing off the gloss finsh but not really showing off the wash... :

Base what i built :) £1 photo frame with fine sandpaper painted up in a Royal Navy style :

Angle makes it look bent but i swear its straight as a die... Funny optical illusions aside im happy enough...

Looking forward to getting her on her wheels but it may have to wait till NEXT weekend...  :/

Right im afraid lots of other things got in the way again this weekend but i did get a hour or so... Therefore lots of touch- ups and get the nost wheel in place...

Note the door at the VERY front is still missing... Im gonna wait till its on all three wheels to pop that on so i can get the right "Hanging there" angle...

A few more bench shots as we finsh off all the niggley bits...

As you can see canopy is on waiting for Kristal Klear to dry before masking off the framing..

Paper clip in foreground will become the pitot probe as the kit part is annoyingly cast onto the sprue half way up its length..

Blade ariel fix came from some spare etched brass... Came out well i think...

Right more waiting for things to dry :/

At home on its base..

With serious flash it shows off some of the tonal variation i managed.. Quite proud of how it came out since it was my first attempt at preshading with an airbrush

In the cabinet with my other Fleet Air Arm builds..

Thats all for now folks !  :D

Hobby boss 1:72nd SEAHAWK FGA-6

Lovely lil plane and a lovely lil kit :)  Highly recommended as any real issues i had were purely down to my ham-fistedness...

Ham fisted? If you're ham-fisted then I must be buffalo rump-roast fisted by comparison. Excellent work.

If you're planning to use the black and yellow stripes around the rear of the fuselage ... don't. HobbyBoss have made no allowance for the curvature of the fuselage in the design of these decals, so they don't remotely fit.

Also, note that the inner main undercarriage doors should be closed. They only open during rotation of the undercarriage, or possibly for maintenance.
