Title: SBY 1/1000 Andromeda
Post by: Madhatter on May 23, 2018, 05:09:47 PM
Hi guys

I thought I would share my latest build here as a few of you are into SBY 2202/2199
Its my take on the Andromeda. It has a lot of added surface detail and my own lighting (I didn't use the kit supplied stuff - too toy like for my tastes)
I scratch built the engine nozzle  as well as I really didn't like the standard kit variant. I based it on the live action Yamato version and IMO looks way better
I am still working on the base for it which will house 3 ships to start with, with room for a Dreadnought to go on as well. I'll shoot some lighting pics of her later tonight and post them up too

Thanks Steve

Well, here are the lit shots. I had a minor emergency with this as I couldn't get the lights to work. I had to break it open to get inside to see what was wrong. As it turned out, the main power lead hadn't been soldered on properly and it had come off completely. As a result of not doing things right the first time, I now have to replace a missing greebly from the back end and fabricate one of those little sensors from one of the rear guns. Fixed the lighting though!

That's all I have sorry. I did take more but they weren't worth showing.

Once I have my fleet base all done I'll include some pictures of that too

Thanks very much for stopping by and having a look

This is quite cool but I have to ask a couple of generic questions (and I'm not trying to poke holes in your model, here): why would a spaceship have what appears to be a wooden plank deck near turrets A and B? And why would all the turrets be arranged as if the ship fought in a gravitational field?

It's something I've always wondered about these ships. Obviously the design aesthetic has been established from the initial use of the Yamato, but most of the pure spaceships in that universe seem designed to fight from water. I haven't seen enough of the episodes, but are there ships that have a more non-gravity oriented design?

And, BTW, the lighting looks amazing. Came out really good.

They're fair questions Paul and one of them I'd asked myself some time ago so I'll answer that first
The brown is a tip of the hat to old school battleship decks ( much like pretty much everything from that show does). Its metal not wood.
As to the gun arrangement, these ships also fly and fight in an  atmosphere too. Again it's mostly another nod to history
I don't know if youve ever seen the show but its whole premise is pretty much naval warfare in space including tactics and so on. The designs of the ships are heavily influenced by battleships

Thanks for the answers.

OK, I can get behind the coloured, aesthetic nod to battleships.

As for fighting in atmosphere and space using ship tactics, well I've seen a couple of episodes and that was a thing that turned me off the series. I had wondered if they maintained that approach throughout. You seem to indicate that they did. Soooo, I'm Ok not having watched more, then.  ;D

Thanks again.

Yeah I guess it's not for everyone, but I still enjoyed it for the fun that it was. I like the ships more than the show myself

I'm not "into" SBSY but I do like the designs of the ships, aesthetically (Full steam ahead & damn the practicality!). 8)

Great job, mate! Another awesome addition to the growing collection!

Thank you my friend. Im glad to know you like the designs as well. I initially wasn't much of a fan of the Andromeda but the design grew on me the more i looked at it
