A-10 ideas go here! >:(

First up, how about a turbopropped A-10?

A-10-Turbo-Full-2 by Motschke, on Flickr

The engine pods are from an An-32, slightly modified and out of scale. I just looked for something that kinda looked like what I imagined it should.

Unfortunately, the old firehogs.com website is no longer operating.

It had plenty of images for the proposed A-10 based firekiller aircraft.

Navalized A-10, whatever the choice of powerplant, with the wing fold just outboard of the main gear.  For something outre', a navalized two-seat A-10 with the gun replaced by a very large AI radar and fire control and with multiple Phoenix or Phoenix ER (either with an integral rocket-ramjet motor replacing the rocket motor or with a booster that results in a missile very much like the Eagle) in a Missileeer role.  I've been doodling on the integral rocket-ramjet-powered Phoenix ever since reading that it was the losing proposal to Vought's LVRJ test program.

I have a kit in the stash that will be my navalized Hawg, in USMC markings. It'll have the folding wings, though I'm not sure of which way I want to fold them - up and over the fuselage or fore-and-aft parallel to the fuselage?  It'll make it into the display case one of these days...

Not exactly unprecedented in the real world:

It seems putting four gun pods on an Su-22, two facing forward and two facing back was not uncommon.

Old quick-n-dirty twin notion. I actually had the stuff to build this one, and a twin-boom variation with tail-gun,
but I lost interest so I sent the kits, along with a bunch of other stuff, to Greg (cthulhu77).

I also futzed around with a navalised conversion of the Trumpeter 1/32 A-10 NAW,
with a three-barrel reduced weight main gun and folding wings. I kept flip-flopping
between up-n-over, skewed-hinge line (ala the S2F) or full-on twist-n-fold old-school
Grumman style. Again I lost interest, so I donated the kit to the IPMS-Seattle Show raffle.

I've now decided that if I was to do a folding wing A-10, that due to the brutal appearance
of the aircraft it would have to be a a Fairey Fulmar or Barracuda style wing-fold.  ;D

You know how the Bronco was supposed to be operable from floats? Weeeell...
So are those floats just braced that way or are they retractable up to the wing?  The open truss there works for the second, for the first I'd expect a rather more faired strut picking up the trunnions, main and bracing, for the main landing gear on each side.

I am planning an RAF A-10A N/AW using the Trumpeter 1/32 kit.

I will be installing a refuelling probe on the nose ala Buccaneer/Intruder. Probably be finished in wrap around gray/green cammo, possibly overall gunship gray. Markings will be 617 Squadron.

Have thought of fitting the Tornado LRMTS and FLIR pods from Relish models

Speaking of two-seat A-10s, how about one in the "Missileer" role with the magazine replaced by "black boxes" and a suitable antenna in the nose (same AWG-9 or AN/APG-71 as on the F-14) and lots of AIM-54s, with a few Sidewinders on the outboard hardpoints?

The Seahog for ChernayaAkula!

Nice one - that looks very buildable, possibly using the old box-scale Revell Mariner for the hull and tail.  8)

For the 1:48 builder a partial component list for a Norwegian AF Warthog
1.  Tamiya A-10, second edition. FSD model easier to modify and be both obvious and subtle
2.  Archer's resin rivets to add missing detail
3.  Chaff/flare dispensers of your own design
4.  Hasegawa Japanese weapons set for the ASM-1 and 2, later rather modified.

More to come: seat, ip/HUD, ECM, pods, etc.

At the current time Tamiya Warthogs often found at shows quite inexpensively.   Mine, for instance, was part of a two-for-$15 deal, the other kit being a Tamiya F-15J.

The free 1/48 Monogram Warthog kit has the cockpit already started and the craftsmanship is rotten....tube glue in excess, fingerprints melted into the plastic.   If there is a way to hide the intakes and a nacelle seam which have the same heavy handed approach, the kit would be  prime candidate for something akin to this.   :)

Looks like and sounds like a job for two-part putty which would fill in the void for the cockpit and give you the necessary weight to keep the nose on the ground.  Along the way lose that little pylon for the Pave Penny pod on the right side as it would not be of much use after the human is removed from the link.  :)

Saw this Global Hawk and had a variation on the idea:

just paint the canopy, you could even make it a single engine and do the V tail as well (might be something a whiffer could knock out in couple days :) )

Retro Thunderbolt:

Upon seeing this, I got this image of an A-10 with a piston engine (or two) in the fuselage driving some sort of mid-fuselage propeller (think Daimler-Benz "Jäger" - LINK).
Maybe even a ducted version of that, which would make the resulting thing look sort-of Heinkel Lerche-ish, only with a smaller propeller, proper wings and taking-off conventionally.

Sorta-edit-before-even-posting:

Whipped this up in a few minutes:

You'd probably have to be bit careful with this on take-off and landing, but I had these prop blades in the "in-progress" file as left-overs from the turbo-proppped A-10 on page 1 of this thread. That why it only has four blades per prop. I guess you could have a couple more (think A400M or An-70).
The exhaust stacks are from some P-51 line-art (and probably not to scale).

Cheers,
Moritz

So I guess those folks commenting on the article expect that in future Canada will only be fighting in the 'Stans,
and similar situations? i.e, in an environment with total air supremacy against an ill-equipped enemy?
Sorry, dudes thinking that the conflicts of the past two decades are the only model for the future is pretty silly.
Also the notion that the F-18s would be 'effective top cover' sounds like they're thinking of the A-10 = Typhoon,
CF-188 = Spitfire over Northern France circa 1944. Again an unbalanced situation.

The A-10 was effective in Iraq and Afghanistan, in an asymmetric air environment with limited SAM elements,
however they'd be dead meat against a well equipped, professional force. The assumption that 'Allied' forces
will always have air superiority is a dangerous assumption.

The A-10 was used for CAS, but was primarily designed as a tank-killer to stop the Red Hordes, and if the
balloon had gone up in Europe they probably would have been lost in large numbers trying to do that job,
just as the Sturmoviks were lost in large numbers in WWII.

No, they were shot down by Luftwaffe fighters in large numbers, particularly the single-seaters,
adding the gunner helped, but they were still vulnerable.

Stealthy (?) A-10:

RAM internal coating on the spinners and composite fan blades (possibly with RAM molded into them - NGC has developed interesting technigues for RAM-containing composites) would make a start in helping reduce signature but, really, I don't know of anything that could really "Stealth" an A-10, it's not intended to be with that big gun.

Yes, I quite agree.  Reduced signature, yes; stealthy, no.  You could probably reduce the IR signature by extending the nacelle aft and using a daisy, lobed, nozzle to mix hot and cold exhaust streams.

Stealth and A-10 just don't belong in the same sentence. If your'e a bad guy and there is an A-10 in the area you will know about it soon!

Stealth can also mean low noise. Its hard to hear an A-10 creep up on you, especially if you are on the move in a track with a headset on! Then its BRRRRRT!

posted once already but my answer to the more stealthy version A-10. Canted fins, single engine...someone needs to chop the nose off an F-35 and add that as well, first person who built it may have to go into witness protection...  ;D

Not an A-10...but a damned close 'clone':

Its the Saab P.1642 which was part of the B3LM program aimed to create a lightweight attacker to supplement the Viggen. Compared to the A-10, it was significantly smaller and lacking a gun, but did share the characteristic twin-tail and widely-spaced engines (which were to be RR RB401 high bypass turbofans). The nose seems to be configured for some kind of sensors, and five underwing hardpoints (one on either side of the main landing gear and one centerline) were planned in addition to wingtip rails for AIM-9s. A radar was not planned to be installed on the design in hopes of keeping costs low.

Saw a Pucara model the other day.. got me wondering about a 2-seat A-10 with turbo props mounted over the wing & above the existing wheel sponsons,  turbofan delete, and maybe the T-tail.

Quick (no T-tail) and dirty (note prop and GIB/WSO position -  :P) mod of my turbo-propped A-10 (first page of this thread). I think a T-tail would probably look better than the normal A-10 tail on this one.

Has a bit of the Pucará about it, even more-so if you give it a T-tail. ;)

In 1/72 use the vertical fin from a 1/48 A-10 kit and mod the tail?  I think I'd go more for a cruciform tail than a T-tail, but that's this engineer's design preferences.

First up, how about a turbopropped A-10?

A-10-Turbo-Full-2 by Motschke, on Flickr

The engine pods are from an An-32, slightly modified and out of scale. I just looked for something that kinda looked like what I imagined it should.

Inspired by ChernayaAkula's great design, I wondered about a boom tail A-10...

Interesting choice that the grey colouring continues to the topside of the wings. The wing edges did sometimes have Medium Green splotches over the OD base, but Neutral Grey I don't remember seeing except on the bottom, was there an actual scheme like this on a plane/Squadron/Group? (The Jug units especially in Europe seem to have had a multitude of alternate schemes, some even using RAF colours, so wouldn't be out of place at all - I'm just curious.)
