Mil Mi-24 Hind
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:20:41 PM »
A thread for any and all Mi-24 Hind ideas!

------------------

Mil Mi-24CA "MishKa" by "Soosnik" on www.scalemodels.ru. A couple more pics of this wonderful kit-bash can be found HERE.

I believe Greg knocked up a similar profile a while back.

-----------------

Something that caught my fancy lately is a Hind equipped with AAMs for anti-air operations. I figure should it ever have come to the Cold War going hot in Central Europe, a couple of Hinds equipped for anti-air operations would've been a decent idea, both offensively and defensively. Covering armour operations by going after NATO's tank-busters (Cobras, Lynxes, Bo-105s,...) or protecting Soviet helo assault groups from NATO aircraft, such as German Alpha Jets (which were supposed to go after soviet helicopters). For the air-to-air role, I want to equip a Mi-24V with UPK-230-250 twin 23mm gun pods on the inner pylons (hard-hitting cannons are always a good idea) and twin (maybe whiffed triple?) R-60/AA-8 Aphids on APU-60-II launchers on the outer wing pylons and two more R-60s in place of the wingtip ATGM launchers (as below). The APU-60-II launcher is for two R-60s, but it looks like it could easily handle a third one.

Here's something that was done as a prank by Czech armourers. The launchers are usually for the AT-2 Swatter ATGM and aren’t wired for use with R-60s. Looks credible enough, though.

From THIS THREAD

These two below are are not pranks, but the real deal!

Mi-35M with quad SA-7/14/16/18 launcher on the outboard pylon:

SOURCE with much bigger pic

Same launcher on the inboard pylon, just not stacked as in the pic above.  Probably the same Mi-35M demonstrator at different times (note different sensor fit).

A single twin launcher as in the pic above is supplied with Zvezda’s excellent 1/72 Mi-35M kit. Why just one? Beats me!

Mil-24 with pusher ducted propeller:

Wouldn't take too much more effort to take it even closer to Piasecki's X-49A concept.  that could get interesting.

For that matter, the X-49A as it is could provide some good raw material to whif from a Sikorsky H-60/S-70 basic stock.

Actually have a Hind on the build list... only WHIF is the paint job, though. (In a gun-board buddy's Monster Hunter International series, the heroes use a disarmed Hind--payment from the Kazakh government for removing a tribe of Orcs, one of whom flies the thing--as their ride out to Undead outbreaks.)

Here's a Hind I happened upon at a show this past weekend:

It's painted up to commemorate WWII and follows the Coastal Command scheme worn by the Liberators of 311 (Czechoslovak) Squadron late in the war.

311 is considered an ancestral unit of the Czech air force's 22 Wing, which the hind squadron is assigned to.

Who would have thought that a Cold War eastern gunship helicopter could wear Coastal Command so well?  :-*

Remember, that's not the first Eastern Bloc aircraft to wear a commemorative Coastal Command scheme, either.

No... This is Mil factory Flying Laboratory modification and will be participate on following Moscow Airshow MAKS 2015.

Bigger sign says ''Helicopters of Russia'', while smaller means ''Moscow Helicopter Factory named M. L. Mil''.

Usually, Russians (and earlier Soviets) designated such variants as LL (Летающая лаборатория, Letayushaya Laboratoriya = Flying Laboratory), MiG-25LL for example, which was primarily used as chase aircraft for Buran spaceshuttle program. So, I guess this supposed to be Mi-24LL. However, I couldn't find is this an actual designation...

According to this page, the designation is ПСВПС-ЛЛ (PSVPS-LL) for Перспективного Скоростного Винтокрыла Поперечной Схемы ... instead of the expected Ми-24ЛЛ.

Nice found...  :)

According the link, it seems that program is named Mi-H3, and PSVPS-LL is designation for technology, not the helicopter itself.

Also on http://military-informant.com/airforca/vertoletyi-rossii-pokazhut-na-vyistavke-maks-2015-prototip-letayushhey-laboratorii-vintokryila-mi-h3.html is said that this prototype is based on Mi-35 (export variant of Mi-24V) with retractable landing gear. Roughly translated, PSVPS-LL supposed to be Perspective High-speed Rotorcraft of Transverse Schematics - Flying Laboratory.

Well, since the Hind already looks like the dropship from Aliens, painting it up as the eponymous character is just a natural progression... :P

Kojima Productions' vision of a Mi-24 replacement- a merger of sorts with the Mi-28:

Australian Mi-35M (vaguely reminiscent of the Tiger camo)? :-*

Word is it's for Pakistan, but looks more South American IMHO.

That modeler overdid it on the weathering.  ;)

Actually, in doing profiles, I realized that dumb bombs are often the most weathered things on a plane because they just leave those out in the open to get rained on and nobody bothers repainting them.

Cheers,

Logan

What a great look! Its like the new and the old combined!
In september last year it was still in these colors... and now some new photos from this month... As you can see, it received typical Mi-24 wings, a new colors (some kind of camouflage?) and number 271, but without visible serial number...

Wonder if we make it mean again with a mig style nose and some canopy framing?
