US Army Aviation Convair AV-2A Copperhead
« on: September 04, 2012, 02:42:26 AM »
Here are some WIP shots of my Convair AV-2A Copperhead aka 1/72 KP XFY-1 Pogo.

Inspiration came from the US Army fixed wing aviation thread and this one using the Lindberg 1/48 Pogo

It will be finished in overall OD with decals from my Huey kits/sheets.

Please ignore the tape / blue tac.

What did I do/use?

- Seat and stick from a Revell SR-71
- Cockpit side panels from a Monogram F-4C Phantom
- Ejection rings/handles from a Monogram F-4C Phantom
- Four underwing hardpoints from an OA-4M.
- TER, Bombs and XM-200 from the Hasegawa Weapons No. 1
- Two 20mm Colt Mk 12 cannons. One in each wing pod. From the A-4 and 1/2 of a 250KG bomb. .
- Added engine exhaust pipes.
- The pitot tubes are on order from Hannants. They are Master Model F-100 units. I broke the ones that came with the kit.

Do I have the Ginter XFY-1 book? Nope. Am I making this up as I go along? Yup.

Do you plan to make a serial of Pogos: prototype/combat/racer/firebomber?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have two more Pogo's in the stash. One will be a stock RCN fleet defence fighter bird with AIM-9s on the wing pods and the 2nd I am thinking could be a Pogo II which has a wing extensions. Go modern with squared-off tips vs the current round.  The big prop gets in the way making missile attachment a pain so I need to get outside the prop diameter. Sounds good?

If you're keen for a bit more of a kit bash on one of those stashed Pogos the Ginter book has a page or two about a proposed FY-2 version with the pilot in a prone/upright pod to fix the orientation problem while landing. A scan of the only image in the book is on the Secret Projects forum:

that looks interesting  ... but haven't they super-sized it to a bomber-sized aircraft ?

You got me thinking.  :icon_surprised:

Bigger Pods (1/48 Drop Tanks?), extended wings tips and a two seater.

Its the same size wing, engine etc. The pilot is prone in the pod when flying level. The only major change is to remove the cockpit from above the engine and the two wing tip single-gun, gunpods. The dorsal tail then has the pilot's pod mounted on it and the ventral tail the new twin-gun, gunpod.

The second Pogo in the background is not to scale with the side view.
