So one of my favorite all time Sci fi ships is the Interceptor from the Gerry Anderson live action show UFO :-*
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/iNTERCEPTOR.jpg)
I have recently (finally) aquired a couple of models of it . My wife is coming out to Cali in a couple weeks and will be bringing them to me but in the meantime I will be working on a super advanced version built from this
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3676-1.jpg)
Nice big model . I will be scalo' ing it from a huge 1/350 rocket to a 1 or 2 man intercepter >:D
-
Texans never do anything in a small way, do they?
Very much looking forward to seeing more on this, Ron! Your fantastic Viper was a warm up, huh?
Brian da Basher
-
OH YEAH ;) I feel bad that my initial build on this site was not a major kitbash :-[ I hope this will make up for that 8)
Here is the preliminary mock up >:D
I am thinking a 1/48 Cobra for the cockpit and a 1/48 Apache for the forward pods and secondary engines. 4 landing gear struts adapted from leftover Viper parts .
The nose missile and the wing pods as well as the vertical stab will house multiple missile pods.
AND THEN THERE WILL BE GUNS >:D
-
Popcorn cooking...
-
Somehow the mockup pics did not post so here they are

Quit messin' around and get to the PSR part! >:D :P
-
Quit messin' around and get to the PSR part! >:D :P
You sick puppy...
-
Hey I gotta go buy more parts first >:D
-
Looking good ! Is it gonna be green like the dinky toy ? ;)
-
That's an improvement over the original in my book!
Brian da Basher
-
We shall see. I snuck off at lunch and grabbed a 1/48 Super Cobra and an Apache for parts rippin >:D
-
Things and stuff ;)
First off if your table slopes toward you be careful how you lay your exacto down
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3789.jpg)
Now progress ;D
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3790.jpg)

coming together nicely. :) couldn't see your toes but I assume counted them and they are all still there :o
-
Very cool, and much more in the brutal vein of Mike Trim's original design for the Interceptor,
which was rejected in favour of Meddings conception.

22 inch long model, a mere $799.95.
-
Doom ,just checked they are all there ;D
Many thanks JCF I had never seen that model before :o :-*
-
Im sorry about your foot! :o
This is an incredible model though. It looks like it was designed to be built that way! :-*
-
Aw heck bubba :-[I'd rather do it that way than workin ;D
-
OH HELL YES!!! That looks excellent Ron! :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks Weave :) I stuck the Apache engines on the sponsons
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3799.jpg)
I will blend them in later >:D I also got this today
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3794.jpg)
So I have lots o different sizes of rocket engines to add to places like the intakes on the Cobra engines and the transmissions on the Apache as retro rockets. I will also be sprinkling them throughout the ship as RCS thrusters >:D
-
im really liking the direction that this is going! :)
-
Holy moly this is fantastic! Yes, I'm envious. I wish I had a fraction of your imagination and skill.
And beer.
Seriously, Ron this is amazing! I would never think to add a small rocket on the front for the nose. Outstanding!
Brian da Basher
-
Really loving it...
-
Excellent use of the Apache Pieces! 8)
-
Thanks all y'all ;) Here is current progress... gotta change hotels tomorrow so I don't know when the next pics will be :-[

The guys who did the model work for Gerry Anderson are probably jealous. That's building into a truly gorgeous machine.
-
Does get better with each added item. Gives one an appreciation for potential of helicopter parts.
Super job, following progress with interest. Does it eventually get Air Defense Command markings?
Bill
-
love it when the little bits start showing up :)
-
That's just amazing, Ron! This baby has more twists & turns than a switchback!
One thing I love about your projects is how much fun they are to watch in progress.
I'm already looking forward to seeing what interesting part you graft on next!
Brian da Basher

-
Hey, We're ALL glad you take showers! >:D :P ;) Missles and guns = (http://www.doomisland2.com/images/avatars/jump4joy1.gif)
-
I love what you've done with the Mercury 9 - hard to believe it wasn't designed just for you to turn into a space fighter!
-
Missiles ? Guns ? Think stronger :) Proton Torpedoes, Railguns and lasers :P
-
Somedays all you want to do is build... but your boss has other ideas! ;D
-
Thanks all y'all :-* She is supposed to be fairly primitive... nuclear missiles, advanced but still standard chemical propellant guns ... but she will get some lasers >:D
-
Hi
interesting build, but did you know that UFO is being remade with a release date of 2013? see attached link, just so long as they stay faithful to the original as best they can otherwise it will end up like Thunderbirds.
http://ufo-themovie.com/shado/ (http://ufo-themovie.com/shado/)
Cheers
-
I wouldnt read too far into that... Theres been attempts to bring it back several times last time people were even cast (I remember Joshua Jackson being one of them) but then it suddenly went silent :/
-
Yeah from what I have read the production is very spotty. I would like to see it but I ain't holdin my breath.
-

Heck of a air-to-air or space-to-space or air/space-to-surface missile mounted on the nose.
Waiting to see more.
-
Hey all y'all I actually got to come home for a little while :-* So good to not have to build in motel rooms :icon_meditation:

Already looking forward to your next update,

Stop effin teasing!!! What scale/kit is the Viper and show us a close up of the box!!!! C:-)
-
Alright I will start a new thread for the Teaser :-[
Now on to business... I was unhappy with the stance of the Advanced as compared to the original Interceptor ... specifically the back legs, so let's change that
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3964.jpg)
I like this much better
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3963.jpg)
Note the difference
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/sotoolslinger/Mercury%209%20Interceptor/IMG_3962.jpg)

That's looking absolutely "out of this world" Ron!
Excellent!!!
Brian da Basher
-
Ron I like it more now with the beefier landing gear. Really imposing. And great job on the RCS thrusters
-
^^^^^
Absolutely agreed! ;D
-
In the immortal words of Jack Palance, "Mmmmm....beefy."
Glad your'e able to get back to the bench, amigo-enjoy!
-
Hey thanks y'all :-*She is on the backburner while I work on Hotrod Headhunter but she is still on the bench :)
-
Wow...missed out on this one. Gorgeous design!!! :-*
-
Thanks my brother :-* I am getting to the finish on the Z-95 so this should be back in the line up soon :)
-
Very cool. My friend Matt (M3) over at Starship Modeler did something similar using the Apollo 27 kit.
