Title: USMC LAV-600
Post by: LemonJello on August 08, 2015, 09:46:09 PM
Well, with the completion of one project (Northrop N-9M), I need something to do while parts of the HMX-1 VV-22 are drying.

So, my goal is something like this:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/lav-600_zps9cvjcrts.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/lav-600_zps9cvjcrts.jpg.html)

Starting with this:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0418_zps783m1elr.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0418_zps783m1elr.jpg.html)

First step: center the turret on the chassis.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0417_zpsw0r9jsgq.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0417_zpsw0r9jsgq.jpg.html)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0419_zpsbqsundpj.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0419_zpsbqsundpj.jpg.html)

The majority of this kit is going to be used OOB, just have to build up a turret using a lot of the details on the existing one, plus a home made brass tube barrel for the 105mm main gun.

Comments and suggestions always welcome.

Yes, I definitely have an affinity for wheeled fighting vehicles.

Well, here's the progress for today.

The suspension.  Lot's a fiddly bits in here:

Oh, I like this one too!

I think you're going to end up with something very close to the Chilean Pirahna with the 60mm HVMS (??) turret, seen in the background here:

Upper hull has all sorts of detail.  Interestingly, this kit comes with two of the wire cutters for the driver's position - one raised and one stowed, so the raised goes into the spares bin for later use...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0423_zps4u9cha5m.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0423_zps4u9cha5m.jpg.html)

I've been playing in Sketch Up and I think I've got a prototype turret that is going to the 3D printer tomorrow.  So we'll see how that goes.

Looking forward to this LemonJello!

In front of the Cardoen 6x6 Piraņa (above) is a FAMAE 8x8D Piraņa with Cockerill CSE 90 mm turret. Have you seen Cockerill's "low-weight" XC-8 105-120HP turret?

Decisions, decisions.  I've printed off two turrets (the 3rd didn't finish due to running out of filament)  I've added barrels to both and need some opinions on which to use for this project.  The "loser" will go on another LAV project in the planning stage.  Both work out to be in the 105mm family of main guns.

Here are some photos:

Option #1:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0426_zpsm1vo33oc.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0426_zpsm1vo33oc.jpg.html)

Option #2:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0427_zpswhzemeoh.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0427_zpswhzemeoh.jpg.html)

Side-by-side:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0429_zpsy2cvxppj.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0429_zpsy2cvxppj.jpg.html)

Bonus - here is the 3rd variant that was taller than #2, but didn't finish when the filament ran out, showing the interior structure.  It will probably end up being used on an ADATS-type LAV variant I have been thinking through.  I've got two spools of filament on order, and files of missile canisters to print off for that (and other) projects.

Thanks for looking, and for any suggestions you may provide.

I switch them back and forth and I'm leaning to #1 as well.   Since this is really my first time working with the MakerBot PLA material, I'm taking it slow to see what glues work/don't work, etc.

Thanks!

I like turret 1, with the barrel from turret 2.

Can't wait to see it done.

Progress report: Turret #1 "won" the subcontractor competition, with some mods to the muzzle brake and the addition of a coax .50 cal MG.  I wasn't liking how the 3D material was responding to sanding, so it was clad in styrene, which will make adding the detail bits from the kit easier in the long run, I think.  Blow-out panels were added to the rear deck where the main gun ammo goes instead of scouts.  Also removed the props and replaced them with storage bins.  I figure the turret would make this vehicle too top heavy for ship-to-shore ops on its own. Now it rides the LCU or LCAC to the beach.

I notice that a new hatch has appeared behind the driver (where the commander's hatch would be on a Grizzly). I'm curious about its purpose.

As I was working on this, I realized that there was no way 3 people could fit in that turret.  I originally considered saying there was an autoloader, but instead I'm going to move the commander into the hull behind the driver, leaving the gunner and loader in the turret.

There will be some added optics for the commander, and probably a single hatch with either a 7.62 or 5.56 MG on the turret roof.

Just being nit picky, but shouldn't the smoke grenade launchers angle upward instead of straight out? Otherwise the turret is really shaping up!

How about an M240 in the space just ahead of the hatch, or just to the right? The coax gun looks good.
Great idea of cladding the turret with styrene; it sure beats an epic prime-sand repeat session just to get all the printing artifacts off.

There has been a little progress, primer and base coat applied.  Unfortunately, the production line at LemonJello Heavy Industries has been halted as we deal with some serious health issues with the Lady of House LemonJello.  Once we have a plan of attack and can get a new routine established, I'll be back with an update.

Good eye! I am applying a digital pattern to this one, I was going to keep it under wraps until the end, but why? The final product may be a little unusual (I hope).

As to the Lady of House LemonJello - we've settled into a new rhythm around the house as her treatments progress and some days are better than others.  When things are good, I don't feel guilty about getting to the bench.

And we've had a set back...I was taking the tape off last night and found the second color had bled under onto the white base coat.  Additionally, I'm not happy with two of the colors I used - the Graublau/RLM 84 is way too yellow and the Neutral Grey is way too dark - the white and light blue I liked.  And the cherry on this sundae is that there was a lot of lifting of paint, down to the bare plastic!

Here is where we stand right now:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0469_zpsac4dxpez.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0469_zpsac4dxpez.jpg.html)

And a couple representative shots of the paint lifting and underbleed:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/jjmj94/LAV-600/IMG_0468_zpsbmgtcmtu.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jjmj94/media/LAV-600/IMG_0468_zpsbmgtcmtu.jpg.html)

So, we'll strip it all back to the bare plastic and start again.  Stay tuned!

Great looking build, has a very good look.
I lifted off a lot of paint on my projects too. I figured out that if I sprayed a flat coat on the bare plastic, it gave the paint something to grab on to. I also started using "frog tape", it has good edges and less stick then masking tape. 3M blue tape works well too.
Good luck on the next try!

Prayers for the Lady of the House.

Thanks, everyone!

I'm at an impasse. I was originally going for an Arctic-type digital camo. I wanted something other than the standard greens/browns/tans to liven up the display.

I spent some time yesterday stripping off the old paint - it's not all gone, but it may make for an interesting effect under the new coat(s).

So, I'm of two minds on this project:

1) have another go at winter/arctic digicam

2) regular camo, but then try the hairspray method to weather a white overcoat

I'm open to suggestions.

That paint-job is truly remarkable! 8)

Great looking build (even though I prefer 8x8's). :)

Though one could add weathering.  I like it best left this way.  Show off excellent build.  Camo is effective at messing with quick ID of what you are looking at. :)

Very nice build, and gives me lots of inspiration for my 1/72nd scale builds.
