No real backstory here ... simple a joie de guêtres exercise.
Mainly I did this just because I like the look of the Aichi E16A1 Zuiun floatplane and wondered how it would look without its pontoons. One thing led to another and my landplane Zuiun had suddenly acquired the spats (or should I say supattsu) of an Aichi D3A.
And thus was born the Aichi D5A1 Shinonome (Dawn). [1] I'm imagining the Shinonome resulting from on-going delays with Yokosuka D4Y Suisei development combined with the need for a more advanced replacement for the 'Val'.
The upper profile has D3A-type 'park bench' dive brakes. For the bottom profile, I've played with Zuiun style brakes (now mounted on the undercarriage trouser fairings instead of the float struts). The lower aircraft is carrying a whif glide-bomb I'm calling Hyo (Hailstone).

[1] The kanji characters for shinonome actually read 'east cloud' but mean 'daybreak' or 'the early dawn'.
