Did anyone ever put a RARDEN on a Saladin? I know we've talked about it earlier in this thread, but that always seemed like an idea with some potential to me.

Thanks,

Logan

There are a whole bunch of potential upgrades that you could do but which were never looked at. The Saladin must be one of the least supported by upgrades armoured cars out there, certainly relative to it's potential. I suspect part of the problem was that, by the time they were ripe for upgrades, the same manufacturer was heavily pushing the CVR(T) range, and they didn't want to queer the export pitch for those by offering a cheaper alternative.

Personally, I've always wanted to see a medium velocity 90mm on one, the GIAT F2 (AML-90) or Cockerill Mk.II (Cascavel & others) being likely candidates.

Is that top black and white one a TEL for a Blue Water?

Yes.  It was proposed but never built.   I have a model somewhere or other of it.

A number of the old blokes in my reserve unit came up through Saracens and according to them they were pigs to drive (makes you wonder what the Humber Pig was like?).  I also recall hearing the Stalwart suffered durability issues in addition to being difficult to drive, this may be why there weren't too many upgrades for the types.

That said though if you have ever seen a photo of a Saracen next to an Abbott they are not that different in size, so maybe an SPG version using an Abbott turret could be done.

I've heard similar stories.  Saracens were particularly noteworthy for needing extra grease to be pumped into their drive trains while on the move during extended road marches.   I've heard stories of troopers being stationed in the crew compartment pumping with foot pumps continuously during trips from Adelaide to Port Agusta.  Must have been a hell.  I've also been in the back of one which was kept as a "recovery training aid" when it's roared around El Alamein doing skid turns around the corners because the steering system was stuffed.

Saladin turret on a cut-down Chinese Type 63 (YW531) APC chassis produced by the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka:

It looks like what they did was cut a horizontal slice out of the hull and then moved the engine to the back. Damned neat job for a 'garage mod'.

Thanks to Logan for correctly identifying what they did. :)

How about a tank destroyer version with a 77mm HV or even a Molins Gun?

Not quite a Saladin with a 77mm gun but there was this South African eight-wheeled variant of the Alvis FV603 Saracen chassis with a 77mm gun:

Logan, commented earlier about the Rarden on the Saladin, just so happens I have the Dragon Saladin on the bench and a Fox Turret from an earlier FV432 build

Could work, likewise the Rarden directly in the Saladin Turret would perhaps work as well. But I read somewhere that everything would have to change sides as the
76mm is loaded from the left and the Rarden from the right. Or visa versa.

Sadly a bit late to test that out as the 76mm is now firmly embedded.

This is going to be an OOB (with a few tweaks) build of a Brit Machine. Maybe Aussie, have not got that far yet. However shortcomings or not, this is a nicely engineered kit and easy to assemble.

Yeah, you're going to need to do one of those as a full build one of these days...

Maybe in Berlin Brigade camo or in the sand and green scheme seen on some British armored cars in Cyprus or Aden? I bet you could even do a sharp Operation Granby one with a big Union Jack flying from it or something.

Cheers,

Logan

Maybe add a Milan ATGW launcher to the top of the turret as well?

Diorama ideas, showing my bias for tracks.

That said, I have a small box of Tamiya Saladin parts if anyone in the US is thinking about doing something imaginative.

For my wargames set in a fictional nation in Africa I decided that my stock of JB Saladins andSaracens could be used as the basis of a recce unit

First up a SP AA Version with twin 30mm cannon (turret comes from a T-34/76)

The CO's "Charger"

Flamethrower or perhaps water cannon?

120mm WOMBAT and 81mm mortar vehucles

If the Saladin can take it, the TA-20 with two Oerlikon KAD cannons is also likely the best chance of having a radar fire control.

Otherwise there is the S530 turret with two M621 cannons.

32 years ago today. https://fb.watch/eENrex0fHG/

At Fort Knox - woke up at 5 to shave and shit before PT, turned on CNN and the radio. CNN is showing two Kuwaiti Saladin Armored Cars in front of the palace, alternatingly firing down two roads 45 degrees apart at Iraqi T72s.

That required big brass balls. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Dasman_Palace

The film footage use to be on Youtube, this is call I could find

and predictably, ended badly for the Kuwaiti crews

And as i watched that drama play out for a few minutes the radio was playing THIS SONG while C-130s were flying every five minutes out of Knox's airfield (taking the 197th BDE - I think - to war stockpiles in the Mid East).

The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbmS3tQJ7Os

Couldn't have choreographed that scene any better than the reality unfolded all on it's own.

And for the last 32 years, I've wondered who those guys in the Saladin were.

Edited - found where the wrecks were dumped.

I disbelieve. I'm only 17, how can I possibly remember things from 32 years ago!?

More on topic, though, this post popping up reminded me that I had a few ideas for Saladin and Saracen based equipment for AltBC... notably a Saladin with a triple 30mm AA gun; Saladin with twin Red Top launcher; Saladin with twin Skyflash launcher, operated in conjunction with a Saracen-mounted tracking/guidance radar.

Litvak: Are you familiar with the Canadian Army's one-off Saladin with Raytheon AN/MPQ-501? Not quite the same thing as your air defence Saracen - the AN/MPQ-501 being basically a Green Archer counter-mortar radar. But it does show that a fairly large antenna could be successfully mounted on the back of a Saladin.

Do you have other Saladin variants in mind for AltBC? One unbuilt concept that made sense to me was substituting a 30 mm L21 RARDEN for the 76 mm L5. I'm imagining mixed armament Saladin teams - maybe two 30 mm autos firing AP backed up by one 76 mm for HE and HESH?

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you come up with for AltBC
