« on: September 06, 2015, 05:52:35 AM »
Folks,

With the end of 2015 in sight (yeah, it's true), its time to start planning the Group Builds you would like for 2016.

Please post away!

Kind regards,

Greg

To start - a variation on the Civilian/Non-Military GB:  how about an Executive Transport GB?  This could include business jets, yachts, Limos as well as those military platforms converted as such (see below for an example).

I'll submit one from last year that didn't make it: Earth Left Behind - The human race has left Terra to expand into the solar system and beyond.  Anything space/sci fi: starships, planetary exploration vehicles (land, air, sea), civilian or military would be fair game.

How 'bout this? "Out of Your Element"  Ground vehicles that fly, ground combat vehicles or racers based on aircraft fuselages, land-based or space-faring ships, etc. etc.

i was kinda thinking of a "Future Warfare GB".
where we will build next generation weapons to be used in a future conflict beyond 2020/2025.
could be ships, vehicles, aircraft, mechs...
on the bench:
-various models

on the drawing board:
-various 1/72 TinTin aircraft
-1/72 Eurocopter Tiger (Belgian Army)
-various other 1/72 and 1/144 aircraft

Sounds good, though you may need to add another 30+yrs to the dates to see anything significant. ;)

How about a "Show us your uglies" GB whereby we do models, profiles, stories etc centred on those less aesthetically pleasing designs (either real world or your own creations).  Example might include the BV141 or Blackburn Blackburn, Trabant...

Another idea:  A "Face your Fears" GB - basic idea is for you to take on an area that you fear.  It may be doing a vacuform or resin kit or perhaps doing a figure.  Maybe a modeller could do a profile or a profiler do a model or perhaps play with a more detailed level of profiling...I'm sure you get the idea.

How about a display team GB, any era, military or civilian, any aircraft type i.e. the usual fighter and trainer types but why not B-52s, P-3, P-8, etc. even UAVs or A380s.  Maybe even a precision driving display team using brightly coloured tanks?

Starship modeler years back did an "other guys" GB: The unsung heroes, logistics, cargo, refuelers, mine sweepers, trainers, Freighters, Miners, etc. all the parts of the stick that make pointy end a spear. Could be great for air, land, sea, and space, profiles and stories. Very inclusive and broad Overall

That would fit in well with the GB suggested in this thread: http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5724.new#new

I've got at least two concepts on the to-do list that would fit right in with that.

The Hollywood Ride GB

Devise a pitch for a movie and then make a model of one of the vehicles that will be in it. I'm specifically thinking of the sort of thing that movie productions cobble together from aircraft graveyards to make cheap "spacefighters" but the GB could also cover:

Real planes used in a real movie (e.g. the Battle of Britain's "Spanish Luftwaffe")

Flying planes (real or whiff) used in a what if movie

Other kinds of vehicles: cars, ships, spacecraft (could be a movie that's made in the future!)

IMPORTANT NOTE: it doesn't have to be a good movie.... >:D

How about a US post war isolationism GB, i.e. the US cuts defence spending, including R&D and take a back seat on global issues leaving other nations to fill the void, or more to the point to continue with plans and projects, civil and military that were delayed, cut short, or cancelled in reality.

i.e. post war airliners and civil aviation, the standard military stuff but also automotive manufacturing etc.

Oh Goody. Then we would have seen 10,000s of aircraft cross the US Canada border. Tow them to the border. Park them tail first and walk away.

Come back the next morning. They are all gone. My bad.

By October the first Hudsons had arrived at St. Hubert and, with the assistance of RCAF and Trans-Canada Airlines groundcrew, preparations proceeded at a frantic pace to check them out, to prepare them and their crews, and to fly them to the British Isles via Newfoundland. Getting the planes to Montreal required an imaginative circumvention of the U.S. neutrality laws. American law prohibited citizens of a belligerent power from flying planes in the United States and decreed that aircraft could not be flown out of the country for the use of a nation at war. To get around this, American civilians employed by Lockheed Corporation flew them from the factory in California to Pembina, North Dakota. There, horses pulled them a few yards across the 49th parallel to Emerson, Manitoba, before crews of the CPR Air Services Department finished the journey to Montreal along the Trans-Canada Airway (built as a make-work project during the Great Depression). It is interesting to note that, while the practice of towing aircraft across the border ceased in the spring of 1941, it did happen with a considerable number of aircraft at more than one location, from Sweetgrass, Montana to the maritime province

How about a Totally Wacky GB - instead of trying to make things that are real world or close to, we go the opposite way and just do something crazy and fun.  I'm thinking of things like the following...or crazier:

(removed pictures)

Builds like "Slowy Jet" fit this ?

How about a US post war isolationism GB, i.e. the US cuts defence spending, including R&D and take a back seat on global issues leaving other nations to fill the void, or more to the point to continue with plans and projects, civil and military that were delayed, cut short, or cancelled in reality.

i.e. post war airliners and civil aviation, the standard military stuff but also automotive manufacturing etc.

You could expand it and just keep the US out of WWII entirely.

I believe US involvement was inevitable however not returning to isolationism post war may have been a bit unusual although there were massive defence cuts that were only reversed with the start of the cold war, so perhaps the setting could be post war conferences were more successful and conciliatory and the US never gets involved in the cold war.  The US was anti colonialism anyway so maybe if there was less domestic concern over the USSR US public opinion could have forced government to stay out of the majority, if not all of the colonial wars that became defector battle fields between east and west.

How about speed?  All things fast (or that look fast) planes, trains, automobiles and of course ships, rockets etc.  Or things that have been modified to be faster than the original or usual version of what ever it is.

Could this be combined with this idea:

Let's get racing GB - could cover race aircraft, race cars, race boats, race airships...

Yes but while race thingies tend to be speedy, speedy things don't need to be race thingies and non-race stuff gives a much wider range of possible schemes.

Maybe, but also just generally big and tough.  A muscle car rather then a sports car, a multi engine bomber or transport rather than a Learjet, a super tanker, panmax containership, or super liner as opposed to a luxury yacht.

How about just drop tank anythings? The only rule is that the majority of the model has to consist of a re-purposed drop tank.

Since the new Star Wars movie is out at Christmas, how about a Star Wars vehicles GB for early in the year? Theme is anything to fit into the franchise: it could be a completely new vehicle in the right style, an alternative to one of the "canon" vehicles or even an improvement/upgrade on one of them based on a Star Wars kit.

Another idea:  the Mars GB.  Basically, you somehow involve the planet Mars in your entry.  I don't care if it is based on mars, involves martians coming to Earth, is a space flyby of Mars, is a retelling/model inspired by a book or movie on Mars...just in involve this baby in it:
