A Dark Christmas Knight - FINISHED!
« on: October 07, 2024, 09:03:04 PM »
Possibly "Grim" would be a better word than "Dark", we'll have to work that out. ;)

So, having put the Malkara (M3) Grant aside for now, I have put the Pegaso Models 75mm (1/24) "Northern Wandering Knight XIV Century" on the work bench.

The image on the box cover is about as close to an instruction sheet that this figure comes with, so construction is a matter of common sense (which, luckily, I have a little bit of), trial-&-error, & a smidge of good luck.

The build will be as close to "OoB" as that combination will allow & it is the painting that is going to be the What If... part of this build.

My aim is to blend a number of styles into one (hopefully) cohesive whole.

First influences will be various traditional Santa Claus';

With a few warrior (Santa) influences;

But no Samurai Santa inspiration (although, it is kinda cool);

And absolutely NO weird, deformed AI generated Warrior Santa creepiness, either! :o

Currently in the process of cleaning up the minor flash/casting marks on the parts - a lot less obvious than on most plastic models but much more difficult to get rid of (a quick scrape of the ol' No.11 just doesn't do the trick on white metal). ::)

Cool idea! Can't wait to see it painted up like a killer Santa. Reminds me of the movies Christmas Bloody Christmas and Violent Night.

This is gonna be good!  :D

Possibly "Grim" would be a better word than "Dark"...

Concur! I know that you're going for a medieval vibe but grimm in Old English meant "fierce, savage, terrible, cruel, angry". Sounds like a proper psycho-Santa to me  :smiley:

Latest update:

Four parts being held together by five pins, gravity & the power of Wishful Thinking. ;)

There have already been a few errors,- two where they can't be seen & one which will require a little bit of putty to hide when I get to that stage of the build.

So, overall, happy with what I've done, so far. :smiley:

Slowly but surely! :)) :smiley:

Most of the pins are glued in place, now, but the whole thing is still only being held together by them, gravity & Wishful Thinking.

Coming along nicely! Definitely going to make for a great looking killer Santa. Instead of a lump of coal, they get a severed head. Things nightmares are made of. Those poor kids will never see Christmas the same again.

That is already looking (literally) awesome, Guy!

Three things worth noting:
- 1: As fully-biodegradable items, gifted severed heads are much preferable to lump-form combustible carbon-based sedimentary deposits;
- 2: Looking 'heavy' is essentially for anything/everything even tangentially related to Black Sabbath (in its original, 1969-1979 incarnation);
- 3: It is now technically impossible to view this thread without tinnitus simulating Geezer's opening bass lines on 1971's Into the Void track.

OK, cleaned & rinsed all the parts, & waiting for them to dry.

So, now I'm contemplating whether I want to take this further & make a small diorama with a few more figures.

And I've moved on from Black Sabbath to German Mediaeval Metal & Musketeer Rock (Feuerschwanz & dArtagnan);

Fortunately, I am a past-master at shirking my responsibilities  :smiley:

BTW, does your Dark Santa required any blood-stained helpers?

Maria Tingba coplayed up for Faun's Blót comes to mind. Or perhaps Asrunn in Eihwar's Berserkr?

No music video links. In both cases, more fun to look at than to listen to, IMHO. In the case of Asrunn, it was the authentic Viking-era bunny-fur bra and the Dachshund skull that really did it for me   ;)

No back-up for the Christmas Knight but, if there was, there's ainly one option ... the nac mac feegle!

I'm thinking about some adversaries;

The following are all gaming pieces available in multiple scales (including the 75mm that the knight is scaled to) but most will require a fair amount of modifying to get the exact look I'm thinking of.

Of course cost & enthusiasm will have a significant effect on whether I do any of this, & what I do, if I do.

The darker, pagan beliefs. mythology & practices underlying the modern Christian myths have always been more interesting to me, since I found out about them as a youngster. :smiley:

Paint has gone on & some has come off, & different paint is going on.

Still fairly early days, though, & a bit difficult to show any meaning full images.

Plus, the eldest daughter & the two grandsons are over from the Eyre Peninsula, so modelling is being pushed back a little (until everyone else is in bed).

Last few days have been busy but I've spent some time painting the Dark Santa figure, finishing some bits off & fixing up others.

It's now at the stage where I need to gloss coat the parts & put them all together, which will require puttying gaps & fixing up the paint work (including gloss coating the finishing work.

Somewhere in there various bits will require washes & high-lights before the final matt coat.

The Dark Christmas Knight is finished, with the exception of a few blats of matt clear on some of the fix-ups.

Will do that later tonight.

Then photo's, tomorrow, when I find a suitable background - white, red, green, brown & black are unsuitable, as they've been used in the paint job, so I'll probably have to hunt down something (pale) blue.

Well that came out well, you've attained a level of figure painting that I can only aspire too.

Particularly like the work on the face, you've avoided the "rabbits eyes in the headlights " finish but managed to attain a weary warrior sort of vibe.

Thanks, mate! :icon_alabanza:

But, no-o, they're middling to good, at best, but I try! ;)

As above! And you should be happy with this full-of-awesomeness build!  :smiley: :smiley:

Plus, it has got plenty of 'Christmas Cheer' ... assuming that such a cheer would also be a blood-curdling battle-cry  ;)

I've just had the incredible experience of having my wife walk in & ask "Why is there a knight on the bookcase?"

To which I replied, "It's Christmas, that's Santa!"

I then received a confused look & she walked away.

Man, I LOVE being weird! ;D ;D ;D

I have to add to the plaudits... you have done a terrific job on this for a figure scale you have not worked much with.

The face and beard, sell it for what it is, as does the colour choices. Really well done.

If you get the urge to do a couple more tweaks then might I suggest a bit more shading on the bottom of cloak to suggest trailing in the dirt from time to time, especially since it is white.

Thanks, BT! :icon_alabanza: :D

There are plans to do a bit more weathering when I finally decide if this is going to be part of a small diorama or a stand-alone figure.

As a stand-alone, he'll get a very light weathering on the cape, similar to his boots (only lighter). :smiley:

As a diorama figure, the weathering may be slightly heavier & involve some of the Vallejo Snow Effect paste I have in the armoury. ;)

The diorama needs me to summon up the courage to use AliExpress, or Etsy, or ebay to but some figures from. :-\

A diorama of Santa opening a can of whoop a$$ on the old Krampus devil!
And saving some children in the process!
