Charlie on the left!
« on: October 17, 2013, 10:29:36 AM »
It's great taking a week off - I get to finish models! I got the Masterbox 1/35 scale "Charlie on the Left!" in part because of the box art. Masterbox really does a great job with dynamic figure poses:

I combined it with the Academy M151A1 kit. The Academy kit was an uneventful build. The Masterbox figures took a lot longer, mainly because there was no way of getting the .50 ca gunner to fit. I did some plastic surgery until he fit OK, and called it a day. Not the most accurate super detailed job, but I think it came out OK. I didn't build the two VC figures from the kit.

The uniform colors are off and their gear doesn't quite match the boxtop. The uniforms aren't as crisp as I would have liked. I was tempted to replace them with some DML Marines, but that would have involved yet more plastic surgery.

Awesome job! Their box art is great, the figures can be less so, but the poses are fantastic! I have that set, fated for a not really Real World Vietnam diorama...

Thanks guys. For me, figure painting is the hardest part. It can take a long, frustrating time to get passable results. By the time I'm done, I've exhausted my limited supply of figure painting interest and motivation.
On this set, the heads and expressions were really well done and fairly close to the boxtop artwork. The uniforms... not so much. I though the black guy would be the hardest one to paint, so I started him first. He turned out to be pretty easy.

I was tempted to build a couple of Tamiya's 1/35 Velociraptors as "Charlies"...

It's great taking a week off - I get to finish models! I got the Masterbox 1/35 scale "Charlie on the Left!" in part because of the box art. Masterbox really does a great job with dynamic figure poses:
The box art would lead you to expect that the figures would be wearing the Flak Vests.  Seems that was ignored on the box contents.  The helmets appear to be a bit too small for the heads that are covered.  Almost like they are wearing only the helmet liner and not the entire helmet.  I only notice that as I had to wear that helmet type in real life and most of the cadre personnel that were not in a drill sergeant position would wear the helmet liners and not the entire helmet so you could really see a difference between the full helmet and just a helmet liner.  It would also explain the slick appearance of the helmets as 99% were covered by the reversible cloth two season camouflage cover with optional camouflage rubber-canvas band to secure foilage in place (but most often just a decoration only).

Nice work Frank considering how problematic it can be to shoehorn figures into anything that requires a pose of some sort.  Did your Academy M151 come with the antenna base for the R-442 receive-only unit that is next to the RT-524 receiver/transmitter unit that constitutes your VRC-47 FM Radio Set

Very nice work Frank, esp to getting the right look/sit to the figs. Crewing vehicles always seems like a good idea but in practise is always a lot more work than it looks to get them posed and interacting in a natural way.  :icon_beer:

As and aside and not a comment on your work but more on the figs in general I do agree with your own and Jeffs comments and think Masterbox let themslevs down a bit with the lack of bulk in the uniforms, but thats a common failing in my opinion and not just down to Masterbox. Unfortunately you generally have to get higher priced resin figs to get close to a realistic bulk and hang on the uniforms.

Brent, I have noticed that problem with a lot of the MB figure kits.  The box art work would have you expecting flak jackets/vests on the figures.  The one figure looks like he was cloned from the old Tamiya M113 kit, especially the undersize helmet which seems to be hit or miss with many model companies.  After discovering for myself the failings inside of the MB figure sets I have pretty much avoided them.  But their box art is very inspiring.

Yeah spot on Jeffry, I always look look at build reviews/pics of figs now before blowing the cobwebs of my wallet. I was swayed by many superb Ron Volstead DML box tops in my youth but now when I guiltily pull them from my stash to build, I look at the sprues and just push them back into the box. Theres more than enough work in filing / assembling a multipart fig anyway without getting to the finishing line only to realise the paint won't hide it's flaws. Franks done a great job with the MB figs on offer here though.

The missing flak vests was annoying; I thought of using the DML figs with flak vests, but I didn't have enough for all three and modifying the two that I have would have taken this project from "fun" to "annoying".

I checked the helmets and they are about the right size. The heads (or at least the tops of the heads) may be too big. I didn't trim the tops, so the helmets may be riding higher than they naturally would, making them look smaller. They have a half-assed attempt at the crinkled camo cover.

Not all MB figure sets are bad; some of the modern ones are OK. One common annoyance (which they're slowly correcting) is that the figures never quite matched the boxtop artwork, especially when it comes to included gear. This was a recent kit, so I don't know what happened.
At least they're better than the Trumpeter PMC figure kits; even wargamers would probably find them out of proportion.

The M151A2 comes with two rear corner antenna mounts, but only call out for one antenna. the second one could probably be used as the aux. antenna, but I sure didn't use it (and it wasn't called out in the instructions).

Same here. The earliest DML figures were atrocious. They improved quickly, although their recent sets just don't have the action poses of most MB offerings. Plus they're still stuck in the all NAZI all the time mode.

This diorama reminds me of a story a relative told me of his time in Vietnam.  He was a member of the Australian Army Service Corps, driving trucks and his story was of the response of the escorting USArmy MPs when they thought they had come under fore from the side of the road.   The Jeep / MUTT took of at speed leaving the MP manning the M-60 pintel mounted on the tray trying to hang on for dear life while attempting to top load the M-60,  apparently no one had ever shown him that you could just push the belt in from the side without lifting the top cover.

Which is interesting 'cause the US Army Field Manual on the M60 actually uses that as the way to load the M60.  Yet, in every picture and film I've seen of US Army troops using the M60, they're opening the cover and placing the rounds on the feed tray.   I suspect that is 'cause that was how they were taught to with the .30 and .50cals and so that was what they did with the M60.

Australian anti-Ambush drill is to drive immediately over the top of the ambushers if possible.   Very disconcerting, I'm sure.
