1/48 Helicopter kits...where be they all?
« on: August 04, 2012, 05:31:11 AM »
Hi folks,

Something that has frustrated me for a while is the apparent lack of helicopter kits in the 1/48 scale.  It seems possible to get more kits in 1/72 and 1/35 then in 1/48.  Thoughts?

Regards,

Greg

Academy do several MD-500s - dull, I know but the cabins are good for sci-fi crew-pods.

Don't think there is any kit of the Super-Frelon other than the big 1/35th Heller one -- you may have to build that & just park it further away from your eye :-X   There is a civil Frelon in a museum in Oz.

Aérospatiale Super Frelon
Aérospatiale Puma/Cougar
Kamov Ka-25
Kamov Ka-27
NH-90

According to the PAK-20 book Greg, there's the following
Mil-8/17 --   Cutting Edge (also known as Meteor Productions); Mee [reboxed by DFI & Mir (could be 1/50)]; Navigator; Russian Project
Mil-24 --   Combat Models; Monogram; Trumpeter
Super Frelon --  Heller and Mee did one in 1/50
Puma/Super Puma --  Heller and Mee did one in 1/50
The only Kamov I can see in 1/48 is the Ka-50 by Italeri

When looking for the Super Frelon or Puma, you might have more search success if you used SUD-Aviation instead of Aérospatiale

Are you sure about the Hinds?  I am after the A model not the D.

The Monogram kit was issued in 1993-94 in the Iron Curtain series, what version it is it doesn't say I'm afraid, it just says it's a Mi.24 Gunship. Combat's is a 'D' but then trolling through the Trumpeter listing I can't find the 1/48 kit.  I think that might be a typo but I'll email the author and try to find out.

Yeah, every 1/48 Mi-24 I have seen is a D model (or latter - I have seen some Es/Fs) whereas I am after the A:

Add to your list above the several versions of the UH-1B/C that were offered by Monogram as a USAF Rescue Helicopter, US Army MEDEVAC, US Army Gunship.

The Gunship version has been released under the Revell Germany label and the MEDEVAC has recently been released as a retro-box art kit.  The one that is elusive is the USAF Rescue version as it had a different roof with a rescue hoist mounting molded on it.  Don't remember if the passenger compartment had the gunship ammunition box molded on or different floor without that feature.

Did Italeri ever release the EH-101 in 1/48th scale?  Or was that the NH-90?  The Italeri catalog from several years ago was proclaiming one or the other to be available in the next year but I have not seen it.
