DHA "Drop Bear"

One of the many users of the D.H. Vampire was RAAF. The service had 80 single seaters and 110 trainers. In the late 1960s the trainers were about to end their servicelife, but that changed suddenly.

On a fact finding tour to Las Vegas in 1969 some RAAF top brass stumpled over a project, that could prolong the servicelife of the Vampire and give the top brass a rather decent form of transportation: The Jetcraft Mystere – a sleek business jet converted from the Vampire.

With their heads filled with lots of ideas the fact finding team returned to Oz and set the plan in motion. 30 Vampire planes with the lowest number of flying hours were converted to communication planes.

And as the idea for this project had hit the fact finding team by complete surprise the new plane was were aptly named ”Drop Bear”.

The model will be based on one of the old Frog Vampire kits, that are hiding some where in my stash. If I can only find it.

And here is a picture of the presentation in Las Vegas, that convinced
the RAAF top brass, that they really needed the Jet Craft Mystery Jet

That looks awfully like a very young Phillip Ruddock in that photo... whats the real deal behind that pic? He's the local mayor, i see him at the shops occasionally, and he doesnt mind a chat...so i could ask him what happened in Vegas.

Hmmm....
