If I may compliment you with your vision here.

Indeed   The A22D was my starting point for the Self-Propelled OQF 17-pounder, Churchill Mk.XX.

buzzbomb: StuG mit-/i] 17-Pfunder?

Love your Crusader SP! It has a real SU-85 feel about it. What did you use for the mantle?

Well, it is actually a Stug Mantlet. I figured, why re-invent stuff
It really does look surprisingly like an SU-85. I had considered it in "Archer" mode with the gun over the deck, but went yeah, naahh.. back to "normal" config.

I have a Churchill with 5.5 inch gun, loosely based on the 3" gun carrier as well. Wholly impractical !!

Love the Churchill with 17pdr.  :-* Have ordered a Dragon 1/72 Churchill and RB Model 17pdr barrel.

<...> StuG mit- 17-Pfunder <...>

That  right there sounds like a neat idea for a captured equipment build.
Cheers,

On breech clearance, what about a radical re-engining instead? Would a Bedford flat-12 (or similar) fit into an M3/Ram hull?
The engine isn't the problem, its the turret ring and the fact that moving it at all involves a new upper hull casting. When they picked a turret ring diameter that matched the M3 Lee turret, they really hamstrung themselves for future upgrades., A thing that Brit tank designers did time after time in the eaarly years of the war.

If one wanted to scab on a welded plate superstructure you might be able to cut away the entire forward upper hull and add a casemate with a 17pdr (or other big gun) but the layout and odd shapes of the casting really don't lend themselvles to small conversions, You kinda have to cut away the whole upper forward hull to add in something biffer than the 75mm.
