yuumi2891103 from Starship Modeler sent me a box of parts quite some time ago. (Thanks again Katsu san!) Inside were three fuselage halves of an F-104 Starfighter. I've always thought an F-104 would make a great golden age rocketship. I glued up two halves and used parts of the third to close up the cockpit and landing gear wells. Two halves of the forward part of a 1/48th F-4 centerline tank provided fairings to close up the intakes.

Lots of Aves and Bondo were used to smooth things out.

Extra fins are from the SU-105 build.

A little Perfect Plastic Putty.

When the surface was all smoothed out I first applied a coat of gloss black, then I believe it was Krylon silver. What a mess! The silver attacked the black and made it look like curdled milk! I was so disgusted with this I let it set for ages. Finally last week I decided to give it one more try. I sanded down the silver until all the "curdles" were smoothed away. Down to bare plastic in many spots.

I added some fin tip pods made from 1/72nd F-4 centerline tanks. Each appeared to be from a different kit. One of these was from Katsu also.

Here's where I'm at now.

The first two tries using Testers "Chrome" rattle can had issues also. The paint seemed to take a long time to dry and some areas formed groups of what appeared to be bubbles. That had to be wet sanded down and resprayed. I'm down to just a couple of runs on the fins.

I'll paint these a different color or put some sort of decal over it. I might just finish this one after all.

Looks good

Wow! That is certainly looking the part of a retro sci-fi space ship.

what a great transformation

Looks the part beautifully. Bravo, sir!

Yes it does. Can imagine it on the AFB theater movie screen while F-100s, C-124s, B-47s are over at the flight line. 8)

I can imagine that too!
Question now is military or civilian markings? I have plenty of military decals and some airliner windows and doors too. Tough choice. I wish I had some TWA or Pan Am decals. I'm sure I could order some.

Be subversive! Aeroflot or if you really want to have fun, ANA.
-
I have ANA from a 1/200 scale 737!
I'll have to look for some old style NASA markings
-
Ooooohhhh all nice & shiny!
Many thanks for the photo play-by-play. It's a bit of a reach for me to use anything but Tamiya putty, but you've got me considering other options...

The Aves epoxie sculpt is great for filling in larger areas. I need to learn how to sculpt it better so that less sanding and putty would be needed.
-
Sanded down the fins (again) and painted them flat steel with a brush. I finally settled on some decals so I might just finish this soon.

Hope you like it!
It does need a base.

Amazing!!! Wonderful built. :) :)
Send pictures to Elon and tell him this is what an ITS spaceship should look like! ;D
-
That looks fast even standing still. :)
-
Very cool. :)
-
That would make an excellent hood ornament :)
But seriously, that is one nice looking retro science fiction space ship.
-
Thanks my friends!

Gorgeous work!! Looks like something out of a 1950's Hollywood special effects model shop (and I mean that in a good way). Overall, it fits the designation on the side and, IIRC, comes close to matching the appearance of the ship from Rocketship XM.
-
I remembered that movie as I was looking at the JU 88 decal sheet in the stack. It had F1*XM so I thought, "Why Not?"
Those 1950s designs sure looked different than what happened in the real world. I almost went with a silver, black and white scheme but I decided to stay with silver.
-
Is as 1950s as Elvis was back in 1950s. :-*
-
Beautiful rocket! It has a Wally Wood look to it
-
I'm SO glad you stuck with pure silver! ;D
That's so 1950's it hurts! Fantastic! 8)
I'm not really a 1950's spaceship fan but I love this one. :-*
-
Yowsa that's gorgeous!
Love the cool shape of the cockpit windows.
