Title: Mig-15 / 17 /19
Post by: raafif on April 26, 2012, 12:34:31 PM
Doesn't seem to be a thread for this bird so ......

Thinking of doing a turboprop Mig-15 (maybe calling it the "production Mig-13" ?) as per Alvis's whif of 2003.

It would be the Russian equivalent of the US Thunderscreech for use in Vietnam where jets proved too fast for aerial combat due to their underdeveloped weapons systems of the time.

Below are three of Alvis's Mig-15 variants that inspired me.
The last one has Panther wings .... Hunter wings would look good too.

Each of those has its own character and I like all three.
One thing that comes to mind for a bash would be mildly swept wings like from a Venom, Me-163, Me-262 w/o engines.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. Interstingly, those planes came from accuracy issues with what was the then new Dragon 1/72 MiG-15. While being better in detail, Dragon screwed up the wingspan, and thus, the sweep of the wing. One local modeller suggested taking the wings from the KP kit, but then you'd have a fuselage w/o any useful wings, so...he suggested the straight wing variant first off. Some silliness later, we had the Rodina Airwing!

So, lesson here: Accuracy is good when it's right, and it's inspirational when it's not!

Here's two retro kits -- Aurora based their kits on very grainy photos and press-reporter's guess-timates ...
Mig-15 kit ... a mix of Mig-15, Mig-19 & Ta-183.
Mig-19 kit ... a mix of Mig-19 & Sabre-Dog.
            both excellent whiffing potential !

I'm thinking that a 1/72nd KP Mig-19 kit, sans canopy, may make a nice 1/48th Drone or stand-off missile.

Bought the HobbyBoss MiG-17F specifically to convert into a T-tail.   Subtle, but visually enough change.   The hope is to use some late-type Eastern Bloc colorations.    Czech perhaps.

MiG-17PFU with pilot and cockpit removed.  Bomarc-like proboscis added to former cockpit area and it's an early prototype cruise missile.  Or a Chinese JJ-5 could be used too.
