Since the image above is of M31/The Andromeda Galaxy, we're about 2.5 million light years from either of those  locations.

This is where we are:

M31 is about 20- 25 Milky Way diameters away. The more you know...

Greg, you can't requisition a whole galaxy to store your stash; there are laws against that! Why not use M32? (The little elliptical blob above M31) nobody lives there anymore.

Bah!  Laws don't count when one has this sort of tech...

Mind you, who is to say Earth isn't really there... ;)

Why? Is it the intergalactic equivalent of a pioneer ghost town? ??? Haunted, perhaps? ::)

Really? Which one?  Who's legal jurisdiction is M32 in anyway? ;)

Getting back to some inspiration…

I give you Sea Dragon - perhaps one of the best examples of the Big, Dumb booster concept.  Was supposedly going to be capable of lifting 1.1 million pounds (550 metric tons) into a 306 nautical-mile circular orbit — about four times the payload of a Saturn V. :o  The rocket itself was 75 feet in diameter and 500 feet tall, not including the ballast platform needed to launch it at sea. A capsule and escape tower would have added another 50 feet! :o

Now to put this into a little context (alongside a Saturn V):

Or if you prefer ;):

It's a dwarf spheroidal galaxy that has been cannibalized by it's parent, M31. What's left are old (8-14Gyr) and somewhat metal poor stars (which is bad for Real Estate). It's a slum with no good bars or restaurants or things to do.
"Oh look, another old red giant! No useful planets,  just comets, asteroids and a gas giant. Check. That makes it what, Bob? our 10 millionth? Sign up and see the Universe they said. Bored with our Galaxy? Join the Andromeda Galaxy Expedition, they said. Here's a special project just for you and your team - Catalog M32. It'll be exciting, they said. Last time I volunteer for anything..."

got 'A vertical empire' by C.N.Hill book on loan from my local library today. Has quite a few line drawings of rockets, what was and what could have been. Also on page 325 there is a chapter called 'The 'might have been's' On page 330 there is a reference to a short story called 'Prospero One' by Stephen Baxter.

A quick Google search and I found this- http://bookre.org/reader?file=196894 (http://bookre.org/reader?file=196894)
I have no idea if this is the whole story, but it looks interesting. Or is it Brrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiittttttttttsssssssss innnnnnnnnnn Spaaaaaaccccceeeeeeeee!!!!

A couple of books that may inspire:

I'm reading Old Mars (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345537270/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which is an anthology of modern SF about Mars written in the retro style of pre-space exploration SF (with Martians, etc.). I'm half way through the book and so far every story has been entertaining. The rocketship on the book cover is great: http://www.stephenyoull.com/stephenyoull.com/GALLERY/Pages/HARDWARE.html#5 (http://www.stephenyoull.com/stephenyoull.com/GALLERY/Pages/HARDWARE.html#5)
The artist is Stephen Youll (http://www.stephenyoull.com) and he has other cool work in his gallery.

Even more retro is the Frank R, Paul Art Book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1613772777/ref=oh_details_o01_s02_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1613772777/ref=oh_details_o01_s02_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
He did pulp magazine covers in the 30s - 60s. Here's a Google Image Search of his work. (https://www.google.com/search?q=frank+r.+paul&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=_1b0Uu-sFOrM2gX6jIH4BA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1874&bih=1082)

Lots of inspiration here (http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/realdesigns.php)

Thought that looked familiar. That's Winchell Chung's page: the same Winchell Chung who did the illustrations for the OGRE wargame : http://www.projectrho.com/. (http://www.projectrho.com/.)

The hieroglyphs down the side of that page are from another favorite artist of mine, Patrick Woodroffe : http://www.patrickwoodroffe-world.com/ (http://www.patrickwoodroffe-world.com/)

Here's some space inspiration from Winchell's DeviantArt page, a Warp War starship:

I used to play Warp War back in the day: probably still got it in a box upstairs.... :-*

I might still have Warp War someplace...I've been toting my Microgames around with me for years.
Winchell is a terrific guy, by the way - we've corresponded off and on for about ten years. I think he did
the original art for Warp War - he also did some Traveller work, including the starship Annic Nova...

Those are not Warp nacelles, by the way -they're shuttles.

Oh lucky you: never met him but I always got the impression he was one of the good guys. He did indeed do the original art for Warp War, right after he did OGRE.

For given values of luck ;) Winch and I have never actually met in meatspace - we just stumbled into the same forum ( Starship Modeler ) and became friends. A lrage part of the reason for that was our mutual fascination ( and his, and our own Frank2056's
far superior knowledge of - ) with the 'Leif Ericson Galactic Cruiser'. It spawned a long running sub-forum there : http://www.starshipmodeler.net/talk/viewforum.php?f=39 (http://www.starshipmodeler.net/talk/viewforum.php?f=39)  chock full of a number of different ideas about the origins, background

This would have been so much better than the David Lynch worm vomit:

Jodorowsky's Dune Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-oBEGF7uwE#ws)

Jodorosky's Dune: http://jodorowskysdune.com/ (http://jodorowskysdune.com/)

It was a shame that Jodorowsky's project crashed. He's VERY eccentric, right up there in David Lynch territory, but I'd have liked to see the result, whether I ended up liking it or not. We need more eccentrics making oddball films instead of the under-seasoned, same-flavour sausages we get from the Hollywood meat grinder.

The good thing to come out of Jodorowsky's Dune was, indirectly, Alien. Many of the creative team he put together maintained links and were picked up by Dan O'Bannon shortly thereafter. The Making Of Alien book (which is gorgeous if you havn't seen it) is full of references to the preceding Dune project.

Jodorowsky collaborated with the late great Moebius (Jean Giraud) on his Incal graphic novels. Now that would have been a movie and a half: not a snowball in Hell's chance of it ever happening though...*

The Incal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Incal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Incal)

*although director Nicolas Winding Refn (freind of Jodorowsky) has said that he wants to try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Winding_Refn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Winding_Refn)  I'll suspend my disbelief when I see it though... ;)

I didn't realise until I was researching that last post that Jean Giraud had died in 2012, shortly after Ralph McQuarrie. RIP Moebius.... :(

His work was utterly, breathtakingly beautiful: comic book pages you could hang in any gallery in the world:
