Cessna 337/02 - A spikey tale in one seventy two scale
« on: June 03, 2020, 05:57:05 PM »
Hi all

Again I have  Basheresque story in my head and I am adapting this kit to fit.

20200602_212757 by Robomog, on Flickr

It is a part built  Airfix Cessna 02 I had in the box of doom, it was in amongst a job lot of parts I brought some time ago.  I have deconstructed it so that i can paint/detail the interior and also to clean up the transparencies.

I will be using this as the secondary project to the Speedfire but hopefully will finish on time.

Brian was a very fast worker but still produced some amazing whiffs, i could never be that prolific.

More when it happens....

Hi all

Waiting for the filler on the Speedfire to cure so first job on this aircraft is tidy up the transparencies and get rid of glue stains.

by Robomog, on Flickr

Next job,  redesign the cockpit in line with its new role, all will be explained soon. Note to self:- dont forget the nose weight.

by Robomog, on Flickr

Also started on tidying up the wings and straightening them out as they slightly warped. This kit was not originally built particularly well so there will be a lot of PSR before it is finished

Thanks fo looking........

Hi all

Waiting for the  wings to set on the Speed fire, so more work on the fuselage.

I have closed the fuselage now but the fit is less than good so lots of filling on the joints, I am "fitting " more
Powerful engines with three bladed props so a larger air intake is required.

As part of the upgrade the Cessna is being switched to a fixed undercarriage .

Going to use a Cessna 336 undercarriage or something more robust?  The 336 is the fixed-gear predecessor to the 337.  If you were working with the Hawk/Testors 337 kit in 1/48, you could probably use the main gear from the Monogram Cessna 180/185 (have to form your own spats or adapt them from some other kit) and a Cessna 172 nose wheel and spat.  In 1/72, I'm not sure what to suggest unless there's a Cessna 182 or 205/206 kit in that scale.

It's an old (reclaimed) 1/72 Airfix kit, I will be building the undercarriage from scratch using some suitable wheels/struts from the spares box.  Will look at the 336 and other Cessnas for inspiration.

Thx

Glad to provide what little help I can.  This takes me back 40+ years to when I did design work on the Cessna singles and the 337 in the powerplant and fuel system area.

Hi all

Making wings while the filler sets

by Robomog, on Flickr

It doesn't look to bad in the pic but there are some serious gaps between the wings and  the tail booms so some more filling to do.

I've also started work on the undercarriage and as most of you have guessed.........

by Robomog, on Flickr

........... SPAAATS !

I've never manufactured anything like this before so the next few nights should be interesting..........

Thanks for looking

Hi all

All the PSR and joint filling is complete now and the Spats have been fitted , gave it a coat of dark green to show up any faults (I have run out of primer, and the local hobbycraft has not opened yet, trying to buy spray tins on the interwebs but the postage is exorbitant)

by Robomog, on Flickr

by Robomog, on Flickr

I have sourced an unspatted nose wheel, and I am currently working on the armament and designing the decals.  The back story is formed but nothing on paper yet.

Thanks for looking.........

Thanks guys

The painting/decals are done just about to give it a coat of matt varnish to dull it down.

The armament is under construction, which leaves the nose wheel,  canopy and struts to do.

Should be finished soon.............

Hi all

When writing the back story things got a bit out of hand, the explanation and story is here:-

http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=9378.0

Otherwise the build is complete, had a bit of trouble with the main canopy, but otherwise it went together pretty well, the new munitions were constructed of plain and clear sprue.

And now I present to you a Cessna 02 of the Jeborovian Air Defence Force.
