Carrier escort Slava
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:20:11 PM »
While the paint dries on my other project , I will get started on my next build.

The back-story:
At some point the Russians decide to follow the US carrier group concept. Most of the weapons were removed from the Admiral Kuznetsov and defensive roles were pushed onto 2 large escorts supported by a variable number of smaller ships. This meant that the Russians either had to come up with a new design or modify an existing one, in the end they chose to modify the Slava class.

Changes include:
Replacing all the big missiles(forgot what they are) with the smaller ones from the Udaloy/Sovremennyy class. Or maybe just reduce the amount of big missiles to 4-6.
Increase hangar to house 2 helicopters
Phased radar array
Cut front superstructure and put in VLS
Add point defence missiles
Replace AK-630s with kashtans (or maybe have both)

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, more changes may come later.

The missiles on the Slava's are SS-N-12 "Sandbox" anti-ship missiles; big honking carrier killers!  Udaloy's carry SS-N-14's which are ASW missiles/rockets; think USN ASROCs.  Sovremenny's carry SS-N-22 "Sunburn" anti-ship missiles.  Much smaller than the 12s but MUCH faster.

Go with the Udaloy arrangement for the helos and shift the SA-N-4s forward (they are point defense basically; similar to Sea Sparrows at least in range).  Kashtans are nice but they're big and heavy so keep that in mind with their placement.  I'd keep some AK-630s around for when the Kashtans are down for reloading.

Keep going with it man :)

Liking the concept.

Cliffy, loved the Missile comparisons using the NATO names, many, many hours of Playing Harpoon just came screaming back.
Good Work !!

Almost finished, except for the kashtans. Deck turned out browner than expected, but good enough for me.

Whoa! Now that was quick!  :o Lovely build!  :-* What are we looking at in terms of types and numbers of missiles?
Cheers,

SWEET!!!!!  I love it man!  A proper AAW escort with some SSMs for self defense/add to the battle group.  Glad the hangar worked idea and the others as well worked out.  I love this design!!!  I may have to include it somewhere in my little alternate world  8) 8) 8)

As for the torpedo tubes, the Russians still use VERY large sets of tubes.  Think WWII anti-surface style quads and quins and you'll see them quite prominently on the deck.  I can't recall ever seeing them mounted inside the ship anywhere.  They still use rather large fish and not the smaller, lightweight ASW ones that everyone else has adopted for their surface ships.

After looking at some photos though it seems they are internal as there are some rather long yet short (height) doors below the helo hangar.  Would make perfect sense for them to be behind there.

Look up and just to the left of the ship's name in Cyrillic.

Here's a good shot of the types of tubes they still use.  This case twin tubes on of the Chinese Sovremenny DDGs
