Sheet Lightning - EE Lightning FR8 Recce Version - Finished
« on: April 27, 2014, 03:19:46 PM »
Sitting idly at the bench and procrastinating on other builds, I opened the cupboard of shame and saw a Trumpeter Lightning that I had managed to botch somewhat. That led to furthering the thought I had in the Ideas topic for the EE Lightning. A fast recce bird.
Now the Lightning was fast.. now doubt about that, but as (arguably) the worlds best point to point interceptor of its time, it was woefully short on legs. So using it a fast battlefield or tactical recce was limited. Even though a recce pack was produced and sold to the Saudi's

So what if we put in more fuel in the shape of a conformal type tank onto the F6. Not as clunky as the overwing ferry tank arrangement. Ditch the guns in the F6 belly pod for the Recce module and perhaps move to Sidewinders for self defence.

There's some pics of a Lightning project in Chris Gibson's book 'Battle Flight'.  It shows a number of profiles where the underbelly tank was extended as far forward as the nose u/c bay.

Well that wizzed together...

Packing some Sidewinders for self defence.

Wanted to display the exciting bit of co-ordinated engineering that is the spectacle of Lightning Gear Retracting.

My lovely Lightning Lumps.

No thought whatsoever into correct markings.. just used whatever was in the box.
Nice kit all in all. Have to give the new Airfix offering a run though.

Great job on the landing gear retraction! The extra tank looks great too.

That is 10 tenths of awesome. As an aisde in that first pic it looks a bit like the sub launched interceptor (Sky1) from UFO ......

That is beautifully done but I love the main gear in wonky mid-cycle. Excellent idea  :)
