Savoia-Marchetti S.55 - Dora Wings 1/72
« on: July 08, 2021, 05:20:47 PM »
Hi all,
I'm start to build the S.55 flown by the italian aviator Francesco de Pinedo (February 16, 1890 – September 2, 1933).
In 1927, with Carlo Del Prete and the engineer Vitale Zacchetti, De Pinedo flew on this Savoia-Marchetti S.55, called "Santa Maria", from Elmas (Sardinia, Italy) to the Cape Verde Islands, to Buenos Aires and finally reached Arizona.

De Pinedo - S.55 Santa Maria in New Orleans

If you are interested to deepen the topic, here an interesting site.

As Usual a quick look inside the box:

I love the odd looking flying wing/catamaran layout of the S.55, I look forward to seeing your progress.

Me too. Each stage of construction suggests a different what-if scenario  :D

It is indeed. Looking good Rod   What a spectacular airplane the S.55 was!

And those engine supports were one serious bit of ironmongery  ;D  Very impressive!

The tail looks so flimsy, compared to the rest of it! :o

Yep, part of the S.55's appeal  :D  These Savoia-Marchettis would have looked intensely futuristic when they first appeared in 1924.

The whole airframe looks so improbable and yet Balbo et al flew them across the Atlantic in formation!
