Submarine Ideas and Inspiration

For early in the war, I'd actually remove all the AA guns and have, perhaps, two deck guns as aircraft weren't seen as a significant mid-ocean ASW threat (and weren't until 1942-ish). Maybe reduce the size of the sail or dirty up the fittings of the ship as the early boats weren't as clean as the later boats. Maybe draw inspiration from some of the interwar Italian or British boats? Go with fewer masts and nothing that resembles a radar. Add a sawtooth mine cable cutter to the prow?

Just thoughts.

The Narwhal was a 1920s US cruiser sub, so perhaps a similar two deck gun layout on a Gato?

In 1956, USS Sealion (APSS-315) participated in exercises to test the feasibility of using submarines as platforms for helicopters during reconnaissance missions. Marines were shuttled between the sub and the shore on a Sikorsky HRS-3.

Just a thought, data sharing between Imperial japan and nazi Germany leads to Germany getting good tech data on the I-400 class submarines and blends that data with a modified Type XXI hull to provide mobile submersible V-1 launch platforms for taking the war to the United States.  This would likely be a cleaner version of what experimentation the USN did with submarine-launched Loon misslles (V-1 copies) after WW II.

A Boeing idea to launch jet-fighters at sea -- aircraft look like a modified F-102s.

Boeing design was intended to launch Navaho missiles, supersonic cruise missiles with a liquid-fueled rocket booster stage.  Rocketdyne grew out of the rocket motor work on Navaho.

I can see that, though launching a V-2 from the forward deck of an I400-calls strikes me as having its own special problems (to eliminate fueling problems, you might switch to hypergolics, though that can cause problemes if the tanks get severely damaged (see Rock, KS Titan II silo accident).  I was thinking a one for one replacement of M6A1's with V-1's - warheads could be explosive, chemical, biological, or radio-active (U235 dust - see The Berlin Project by Gregory Benford.  I could see the V-1's being improved with expendable turbojects replacing the pulse-jet engines, perhaps with enough thrust to make swept wings pracitacl on the missiles.

Just a thought, the Germans demonstrated the launch of unguided rockets from a U-Boat.  How about a faired in HIMARS launcher for attacks where a sub-launched Harpoon or Tomahawk wouldn't be the best choice?
