For early in the war, I'd actually remove all the AA guns and have, perhaps, two deck guns as aircraft weren't seen as a significant mid-ocean ASW threat (and weren't until 1942-ish). Maybe reduce the size of the sail or dirty up the fittings of the ship as the early boats weren't as clean as the later boats. Maybe draw inspiration from some of the interwar Italian or British boats? Go with fewer masts and nothing that resembles a radar. Add a sawtooth mine cable cutter to the prow?

Just thoughts.

Yeah like that idea, and I have a book on French subs somewhere. Cheers 8)

By your specifying 1941 I'm guessing your Gato model is of her as built, not after modifications with the cutdown fairwater?

As built.

Cutdown fairwater.

The Narwhal was a 1920s US cruiser sub, so perhaps a similar two deck gun layout on a Gato?

Hi JCF,
Yes my model is the as built model, not the mid war modernisation.
I do like the idea of a Cruiser sub - so extra deck guns it is - Thanks to both you and Paul for the ideas.

Central and South American drug runners are continuing to create new specialized smuggling vessels to move narcotics into the U.S., as evidenced by a sophisticated electric submersible seized earlier this month.

On Nov. 5 the Colombian Navy, assisting by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and local law enforcement agencies, raided an artisan boatyard near the Cucurrupí River in the Chocó area of Colombia. Under a makeshift roof they discovered a high-capacity narco submarine, the Colombian Navy announced on Twitter.

If you've got an OLLIE'S in your 'hood https://www.ollies.us/ollies-army/

these have been reported on the shelves, @ $55-60
https://finescale.com/product-info/kit-reviews/2009/10/lindberg-1-72-scale-ijn-i-53-submarine-and-kaitens

Which for that price, despite the shortcomings, seems ripe for all sorts of kitbashing shenanigans.

U.S. Naval Institute @NavalInstitute

In 1956, USS Sealion (APSS-315) participated in exercises to test the feasibility of using submarines as platforms for helicopters during reconnaissance missions. Marines were shuttled between the sub and the shore on a Sikorsky HRS-3.

Flag Bio-mimic submarine technology, when underwater vehicles use propulsion mechanisms inspired by marine wildlife instead of the propellers (‘screws’) is a hot topic. Firms such as Boston Engineering's Advanced Systems Group and Black River are developing bio-mimicking underwater drones and submersibles:

Another cool FB story.

Sold some planes to a gentlemen with whom I commiserating with him on how badly Amazon ships things.

He then noted his dad wore Dolphins for 30 years as a Torpedoman.

Here are a few the submarines his dad served on:

  • Blenny
  • Besugo
  • Bugara
  • Clamagore
  • Dentuda
  • Segundo
  • Becuna
  • U-2513 (Captured). A Type XXI !!!!
  • U-3008 (Captured). A Type XXI !!!!
  • Trout. A Tang class
  • Grayback SSG. A Regulus Missile carrier
  • Queenfish SSN. A Sturgeon class

Just a thought, data sharing between Imperial japan and nazi Germany leads to Germany getting good tech data on the I-400 class submarines and blends that data with a modified Type XXI hull to provide mobile submersible V-1 launch platforms for taking the war to the United States.  This would likely be a cleaner version of what experimentation the USN did with submarine-launched Loon misslles (V-1 copies) after WW II.

a genuine WW2 German V-2 sea-launch idea ....  Pod would be towed to launch point & rotate to vertical with lid at the surface for firing.

A Boeing idea to launch jet-fighters at sea -- aircraft look like a modified F-102s.

Boeing design was intended to launch Navaho missiles, supersonic cruise missiles with a liquid-fueled rocket booster stage.  Rocketdyne grew out of the rocket motor work on Navaho.

I can see that, though launching a V-2 from the forward deck of an I400-calls strikes me as having its own special problems (to eliminate fueling problems, you might switch to hypergolics, though that can cause problemes if the tanks get severely damaged (see Rock, KS Titan II silo accident).  I was thinking a one for one replacement of M6A1's with V-1's - warheads could be explosive, chemical, biological, or radio-active (U235 dust - see The Berlin Project by Gregory Benford.  I could see the V-1's being improved with expendable turbojects replacing the pulse-jet engines, perhaps with enough thrust to make swept wings pracitacl on the missiles.

If you need a reason to acquire the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Flying Sub kit.

Just a thought, the Germans demonstrated the launch of unguided rockets from a U-Boat.  How about a faired in HIMARS launcher for attacks where a sub-launched Harpoon or Tomahawk wouldn't be the best choice?
