Exactly, but the vehicle in question is still in full military trim because the company that did the speed record are in the business of selling Scorpion upgrades. Can you imagine how quick it would be if you could strip it down and tune it up to a pure "dragster" as per the Moon Sherman?

I've been looking at the AFV Club Scorpion: it's perfect for this because the engine cover is separate and all the military fittings you'd want to lose are separate. It doesn't have an engine, but I'd imagine you could scaleorama a suitable 1/24th car engine.

Exactly what you'd do to it would depend on what rules you invented for it to meet. Mark Neville didn't go into detail in his Moon Sherman, but from what I can see:

Remove all hatches, periscopes and external stowage boxes.

Remove the night sight (box next to gun barrel) and plate over the hole (you can see this on some real Scorpions, particularly prototypes).

Fit a small screen in front of the driver's station.

Fit the upgradeed engine with no hatches and it's supercharger scoop protruding above the deck level.

Remove the exhaust and replace with a small, oversized stub (chromed, of course... )

The U.S. Army apparently modified an M113 with a pair of Chrysler V8 engines and placed both in the troop compartment with a modified power train to connect to the transmission/cross drive at the front.  Rear ramp was removed and replaced with a large metal grate for ventilation and a small roll bar was featured on the roof of the vehicle behind the drivers hatch.  I have no idea if this was an actual attempt at a land speed record or just an engineering test vehicle but the idea of a high speed tracked vehicle is a bit scary considering the stability issues of something like an M113 with a high center of gravity it would certainly require a spatula to remove the driver from his seat after a speed run.

 Amusing Sher-Moon, but, El Mirage and Bonneville are two different places, the former being in California, the latter in Utah. While both are dry lake beds, El Mirage isn't salt.

As to speed records, Christie claimed 60 mph on tracks, 120 on wheels for his Model 1932. 

If one was to try and actually build a drag or LSR tank, you'd probably need to use a longitudinally
ribbed, continuous band track like that used in the B-50 and XB-36 tracked landing gear experiments.

My wife's dad was in the REME and for a while on the 'Heavy Recovery Team'.  They were called out one day to go to a wreck (Army) which happened to be a Scorpion.  He told me the Scorpion had been on a high speed run down some highway (they figured it was doing over 90 mph) when it shed it's tracks, the tank then barrelled along on it's idlers for quite a way with no way to stop, running over a few cars that were around until it hit a bridge abuttment.  They then had to clear up the mess ----

Afterwards the father-in-law said, they fitted a governer into the transmission to restrict just how fast they could travel at ---

I got the impression from Mark Neville's write up that his tank-racing "formulas" included a category for "turreted", implying that the turret needs to be left on to qualify, which is why I left it on. However, if you just wanted a fast tracked vehicle, then yes, a turretless Scorpion would go like the proverbial waste product from a mechanical digging implement...

The photo is from the Marine Corps vehicle dump at Barstow. Looks like a tank destroyer version of the LVTP5. Which would make a great whiff for a tank. Cut down the LVTP hull like in here and add the turret from a M60A2. The Navy wanted to use the 152mm gun-missile launcher for ship to ship (or boat to boat) actions so you would have a sea going, land going fighting machine.

Speaking of racing tanks, I remember there used to be a fellow who raced a "show car" As a special performance at the drag strips it would do a quarter mile !!!  I remember the chassis was from a Stewart light tank. I can't remember what kind of car body was on it,though.
