Hi All - new here and posting my first kit bash
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:51:36 AM »
After way too long (decades) not building models am getting back into it by kit bashing some airplanes.  Set up a work area, bought some models, and find bashing appeals to me.  What I'm doing is also writing a one page brief on the model and including that.  Will see if this first posting works.  Model and brief is on the "Spider Venom".  Wrote it in Word.  Is pasted below.

Spider Venom 1/72
Missions:  Surface strike, bomber interception.
Description:  Long low speed loiter time on prop engines.  High speed dash to target and strike running on props and jet.  In lieu of including a bomb bay that could hold two 500lb bombs, the space is dedicated to storage of ammunition.  This gives the Spider Venom a great increase over having only forward fuselage ammunition trays.  Far more rounds for more passes than typical fighter planes.
Dimensions:  Length 45ft.  Wing span 72ft.
Power plants:  2 x R-2800, 2250 hp each.  1 x J33, 5400 lb thrust
Speed:  450 mph class
Armament:  2 x 37mm,  4 x 50cal,  4 x hard-points 1600 lb each
Models:  1/48 De Havilland Venom    1/72 P-61, A-37, F-86, Dornier 219

Looking at 1/48 Venom kit and thought how can I make this part of a 1/72 something.  Opened P-61 kit and surprise, wing root match was near perfect.  So went from there.
One thing about bashing; the what the heck will fit part of figuring out what the heck to build is its own fun.

Bill,

The trick (at least what I do) is to host them on a service such as photo bucket and then post them in using the IMG function.  See here, here and here for some guidance - if you still have problems just let me know.

Very cool Bill and welcome.

Re: image attachments, we have the forum software set to show a small .png thumbnail that opens to a full size

Wonderful twin-boomer, thanks a lot!
Just a question: when was it designed (in your dreams)? after the F-86 entered service?

I'd say 47-48.  Rational for F-86 stabilizers on outside is that in case of high speed dive at least they would be effective for some control.  Already designed, so taken directly from F-86.  Remembering problems P-38 had with high speed dives.

I'd say 47-48.
It seems you mean 1947-48, not 2047-48 (while 2047-48 would explain why we never saw it in History books...) :D
Thanks for this expert explanation! :)

Right, 1947-1948.    Besides dive control, I like how they look.
Hmmmm,,,  could it have F-86 main wings outboard of the booms ?

Thank you everyone for the comments.  And I am liking all the builds I'm seeing.
Mixing scales does provide a lot of parts possibilities to work with.
A fun aspect of this is looking through many kits to get ideas and find parts will work for each kit bash.
Bomber now in work has 1/72, 1/100, 1/144.   Will end up 1/72 which is what I am building to for a potential diorama in a 10x8ft shed.
