This is a classic:

V-STOL Concepts and Developed Aircraft A Historic Report Volume 1 (1940-1986)

Despite the title, it covers some vehicles from before 1940.

Some recent inspiration from Secret Projects (posted by fightingirish):

Quote
In November 1981 Bell Helicopters presented their concept of an anti-tank helicopter, the Panzerabwehrhubschrauber – 2 (PAH-2), to the German Army.
This concept was based on the Bell Model 249 Cobra. It had a 4-blade main rotor (a smaller version of the Bell Model 412 main rotor). It was powered by a single General Electric T700 engine with max. 1650shp.

The Martin Marietta Target Acquisition and Designation Sights, Pilot Night Vision System (TADS/PNVS) is the combined sensor and targeting unit which was fitted on the nose. There were 4 stations on the stubbed wings to hold weapons like HOT anti-tank missiles, unguided missiles, Stinger A2A missiles, gun pods etc. Like other PAH-2 concepts at that time, this concept also did not have a central chain gun. Later on the AGM-114 Hellfire might have been integrated.

The Bell Model 249 PAH-2 would have been built under licence by Dornier at their final production site near Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. At that site the Bell UH-1D were already built under licence for service with the German Army and German Air Force. The US Army in Europe also had their older AH-1 Cobra models upgraded at that site (AH-1Q’s to AH-1S’s ?).

Might make for a very interesting whiff

^ Very interesting indeed. *eyes-numerous-Cobras-and-Apaches-and-Tigers-in-the-stash*

To think that it was proposed more than thirty years ago and that the actual winner of the PAH-2 tender, the EC 665Tiger, has entered Bundeswehr service only recently.... :icon_surprised: :-X

Something I dreamt up sometime ago, sketched them back in the 80's before I found what computers were -- This was about the time Airwolf used to be on TV.

To give an idea of the size of the Heavy Lift helicopters, the car in the drawing is a 78 Camaro ( I measured up the wife's old car back then)

The top and bottom drawings are compound helicopters, while the middle drawing is of a more conventional layout although the little helicopter that is there is another compound one.  It was while drawing up the little helicopter that I worked out that an Airwolf type helicopter hadn't a hope in flying (very fast that is), so I tried to come up with something that might, hence the bottom design.

Just a whif AU suggestion, suppose that Argentina had purchase Harriers when they were first demonstrated to them, either as "Harriers" direct from Britain or as "Matadors" as the Spanish bought their AV-8S aircraft.  Just how might this have affected the conflict in the Falklands/Malvinas?

I keep thinking of one with Sidewinders on the outboard wing stations, "Martin Pescador" ASM's on the inboard wing stations and a guidance pod on the centerline station.

I was rather thinking of one of their land-based schemes; got a set of Falklands/Malvinas decals that include more than one.  If nothing else, they'd make the success of the Black Buck flights more problematical.

That last one looks like it could be the son of the Bell Eagle eye UAV:

Which incidentally, could have become an Australian product since full manufacturing and development rights for it were included as part of Bell's AIR-87 offering...so there's another piece of inspiration for you.  Maybe an alternate history/profile/model whereby Bell wins AIR-87 with the ARH-1Z.  Thus you could se both the above Eagle-eye UAV and this:

Probably because Bell has more experience and knows that looks are as important as performance (not that the Cobra, particularly the T700-powered ones, lack in performance).

Because it flies!

A RAEME mate who maintained them told me that getting more than a couple of Tigers up at a time was a rarity and having none at all air worthy happened too often.

Just an aside, does anyone beside me think the Aussie Army needs a darker green than the one they use?

Lose the black & replace it with something like the old Foliage Green, the paler green works it some areas but the black doesn't work anywhere - except after a bushfire.

Some closeups to better show the colours:

Re the green, this was selected based upon the environment the aircraft are expected to operate.  The other colours do work - you would be surprised how much effort the ADF puts into this.

Re the comments (that regularly come up re the Tiger vs platforms such as the Apache and Cobra), please remember that the AIR-87 program under which the Tiger was acquired was to provide a reconnaissance and fire support capability.  The primary role is reconnaissance and the platforms were essentially replacements for the Kiowas.

Ummm.....did they truck them in?  None of them are actually flying in that shot  ;D

I must admit the conversation where he said this went along the lines of:

Me "a Tiger flew over work the other day"
Him " don't say that, you'll jinx them"
Me "Huh?"
Him "If you say you saw one flying they will get grounded again"
Me "Oh"
Him "yep, we only just got the one that had an emergency landing at RAAF Darwin back"
Me "What happened"
Him "A warning light came on so the pilot took it down at the nearest suitable location, the problem related to a part we've had on back order for a couple of months, 10 minute fix once we got the part"
Me "that happen often?"
Him "too often, that's why they still don't have FOC"

Interestingly I have similar issues with my French car, bit quirky, good enough at what its meant to do, but God help me if anything breaks.

I'm stirring you Greg, they fly over my house regularly and I actually quite like them and believe they deliver a much needed capability and will serve us well (hopefully only ever in training and exercises).  They also happen to have been a procurement debacle like almost every other program from the late 90s to the mid / late 2000s, the problem is not the platform but rather the process they were procured under with its unrealistic schedule, lack of risk mitigation (it could be argued there was actually no understanding of the risks involved), poor contract, lack of accountability etc etc.  Not just this project but every defence project of the time with the exception of a handful of FMS buys.

Actually if I recall correctly the front runner was actually a modified Mangusta which to be honest would not have met a number of key requirements and the Tiger was definitely the better option of the two.  The Apache was seen as too specialised, too expensive and basically too much helicopter for the requirement, which was actually more along the lines of the cancelled Comanche.  The Cobra has its fans but the model offered was the Whiskey, not the Zulu as many think, so was actually approaching the end of its life cycle which alone made it unsuitable for the Australian requirement.

Due to the timing of the Australian competition and the requirement for an armed reconnaissance helicopter the Tiger was actually the best option.  Things changed, the world changed and the Tiger took a lot longer to get into service than it should have, it was a lot more developmental than realised, Australia actually having to take the lead in some areas and force to wait for others.  The sad, or scary, thing is, now it is in service and doing what it was intended to do, come midlife, it may actually prove better value for money to replace them than to retain them.

My digs at the type are more out of frustration at our dodgy (more incompetent than dishonest) procurements during the period.

They do look cool, always thought the Mangusta would be nice paired with the Lynx in composite squadrons or even flights, sort of like the USMCs AH-1 / UH-1 squadrons, the US Army's Attack Battalions, or Air Cavalry Squadrons.  I imagined an Air Cavalry Sqn with nine Mangustas and six Lynx to support the cavalry as part of one of my scenarios.  The original Gem powered aircraft would of course be replaced with LHTEC T800 powered A129 International and Battlefield Lynx variants down the track.

Just a personal belief that a small army like Australias would do well to have a such a composite squadron supporting the cavalry rather than just light scout helicopters or armed reconnaissance helicopters.

Saw a pair of UH-1Y in the air today, much, much quieter than anything resembling a Huey I've ever seen before, I could be mistaken but it even seem quieter than an Blackhawk.

In contrast, I saw a single-engine Huey this afternoon, and it was the noisiest thing I'd heard in a long time. The whine of the turbine and the WHOP-WHOP of the rotors filled the sky. There was a construction crew working across the street, and the helicopter noise drowned out their heavy machines.

I've posted this elsewhere but here it is again. BTW, I've got my Kiwi decals for it ---  ;)

OK, bit of a cheeky question, could I enter this as an un-finished build and just put my decals on ---- I might actually get one finished   :P

Going to the four-bladed rotor did wonders for quieting it down.

I think some sort of Nazi ground attack aircraft should be in order, probably not a conventional helicopter as it would be far too vulnerable to attack

And a squadron of them flying overhead will shake 'most any building; I know it was definitely noticeable when one flew over Northrop's B-2 facility in Pico Rivera, CA.

You can enjoy that old familiar sound at home if you put a couple pairs of tennis shoes/running shoes in your dryer.  Sit back and enjoy the same sounds without leaving your house :)

Possibly, but I've always thought that the wespe and the lerche would never have been particularly successful in the ground attack role, might be too unstable horizontally, for a gun platform, not enough range and not enough room to mount extra gun or rocket pods..... Would also probably be too complicated for a surviving German resistance to manufacture. Non of this is based on fact, just my own personal opinions
