Been a while since I did any profiles - found this nice line drawing of a Panavia Tornado IDS on Wikipedia and thought I would do a few color profiles. These are all countries that actually considered acquiring the Tornado, to one degree or another.

First up is one for Australia:

We were actually part of the original MRCA project back in the beginning, along with France. I think we bailed first. :(
Second shot was the early 80s as part of the NFA program that led to us adopting the F-18.
Love the profiles!

How about the Tornado ECR or EF.3 as an EF-24 in USAF Wild Weasel markings?

I'm not planning on doing any other variants (ECR, ADV, etc.) that would require new linework. I think the Tornado Wild Weasel proposal had an enlarged housing on the tip of the vertical tail (similar to the EF-111 Raven).

Here's one for Jordan:

Nice profiles! I always loved the Tornado.

I think it would look quite fetching in the "Sand and Spinach" schemes worn by the South African or Spanish air forces' Mirage F.1 fleets.

Great profiles Robert! The Nigerian one looks particularly good. :)

If you fancy doing any more, how about the Netherlands or Belgium? they were both in the programme originally (see below).

France was never in MRCA, because MRCA emerged from the wreckage of AFVG which died when the French left it. The original MRCA nations were Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands. Belgium left first, probably because it couldn't have afforded an expensive aircraft in realistic quantities. Canada was next to leave, not because of any particular arguments, but because the structure and missions of it's future armed forces were completely up in the air at the time, and they didn't want to commit to an expensive programme before they knew they'd need it or not. The Netherlands was the last to go, citing complexity, cost and development time as the reasons.

You might imagine an alternative scenario in which Belgium, the Netherlands and possibly Canada were persuaded to stay by the promise of some kind of multi-national "NATO Tornado fleet" arrangement with an efficient common logistics system, from which partners could draw aircraft without having to commit in advance to buying a fixed number.

Hmmm!? Wearing NATO markings, instead of national, & individual aircraft identification numbers, with space left for squadron designators, plus multilingual maintenance & warning placards & markings.

All the original members who left ended up acquiring multirole combat aircraft instead (F-16 or F/A-18), maybe if the Tornado had been developed as a true multirole type they could have been persuaded to stay.  The Tornado 2000 proposal, based on the ADV but with full strike capability is the sort of thing I was thinking.

A very timely reappearance of this thread considering I have no less than four 1/144 Tornados to smuggle home latter this week.  Having inspiration such as these superb profiles gives me extra incentive to find a way to circumvent the domestic border protection authority and its draconian anti hobby agenda.

If you want an oddball colour scheme with some real-world precedent, I believe the Sultanate of Brunei considered placing an order for Tornados (not sure what version) at some point. Since they'd never operated any kind of jet up to that point the idea was quickly superceded by a plan to buy some Hawks, but even that has never actually gone ahead.

Another idea: how about a Canadian version tailored to national defence, that's basically an F.3, but with the ability to add two GR.1 belly pylons (as in the EF.3) wired for Sea Eagle? That way it could not only provide air defence as a Voodoo replacement, but could also provide air-to-air and anti-ship coverage over the RCN when the latter was relatively close to home. You might also imagine them being deployed to Iceland to extend the cover into likely NATO operational areas. Air cover over the British fleet when operating in the North Atlantic/North Sea/Arctic was one of the original rationales behind the Tornado ADV.
