2001 Orion III - Finished
« on: February 08, 2014, 11:20:34 AM »
Going old school here, just doing a kit. Well a resin kit, so there is that
I have the Stargazer Models Orion III from 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Available at Starship Modeller if you feel the need.
This is a true 1/144 rendition of this iconic ship, now I know the master builder very well and his proof that his model is more accurate dimensionally than the Moebius/Airfix/Aurora kits is compelling.  if you need to know.. well go here

anyhoooo.. here is what we start with

It is beautifully cast by Blap! Models and quite sizeable.
Sadly, this model is again screaming.... LIGHTS !!!!!!! ;)

What sort of markings will you be doing?  Original or different?

Every time someone mentions QANTAS these days I imagine a strange looking gremlin / leprechaun /  Freddy Mercury (late career leather iteration) hybrid on the planes wing ripping it to shreds.

QANTAS?

Given how poorly QANTAS is going these days.. the thought of them sometime in the future, in space tickles me a bit.. and that is after 20 years working for them!

Well I do have some Aeroflot markings.. but Aeroflot had their own shuttle design the Titov V Example of the 1/144 kit

Pretty much thinking of going Canon on this as it is all in the box.. but things and whims may change.
Waiting for some LED gear to turn up before proceeding too far.

Great ideia. That is one of the coolest looking ships ever "made"!

QANTAS always makes me remember that famous scene from the Rain Man movie :)
Good luck to them!

Into the Orion.
As I am a sucker for lights now.. it had to happen so spent most of the last few days modelling time getting the lighting going
Cockpit and passenger area cabling

Cockpit

Got the power sorted and the LED for the Nav lights and the dorsal and Ventral Beacon Fibre optics in place...and bonus... They till work !!!

Now it is a simple as running the fibre optics , putting all the pieces together and painting... simple ! :o :o

Wow that's nice! I had the smaller version (can't remember the maker) which was solid resin. I passed it on to a friend.

Those lights will really make this baby stand out! I'm looking forward to seeing your next update.

It's looking outstanding !   Did you add the photo etch interior to it ?   Your lighting setup would really show it off. I've seen the set at Spaceship Modeler and CultTVman. Looked "fiddly" but ddoable.

Calder Branniff! ( or any other Branniff color scheme, for that matter. )

 Luck with the build!

YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!

Calder Branniff!

(actually, that scheme could or even should be applied to nearly everything : from Fokker Triplan to Spitfire to P-38 to Mirage to B-58 to Mig Fulcrum, including A380)

This spaceplane is one of my favourite aircraft designs. I did one decades ago in CP Air markings, when both CP Air and Pan Am still existed. If i was to build only one model, in multiple schemes, it would be this one. There are a host of expired airlines to put it in: CP Air, Braniff, Pan Am, and a bunch I'm sure I could think of if I wasn't sleep deprived!

Awesome work, the lighting makes it pop!

Is one of those good OOB kits.  Lights take it to a higher level  8)

Regarding markings listed by Alvis 3.1,,, I'd like to add MATS.

The DC8 scheme or the 727 one?

I've done the 727 in 1/44 and have the kit and decal sheet for the DC8. Either would look amazing on an Orion!

I love both, but with a preference for the DC8 scheme because it is even more colorful, with yellow on top of red and blue (what eles  ;) )

There have been plans for other schemes as well actually, and Calder did a painting with some green on a model 707 or DC8 intended for the Mexico lines of Branniff ...
Soeven in the Calder Branniff schemes there is Whiffing possibilities!

Major hurdle crossed it is all together !
Although I have found this to be a handicap event.. perhaps even cross-country. Things have not gone 100% smoothly what with some of the "agricultural fit".. well compared to an injection kit but all easily fixed one would think. On first joining attempt with epoxy.. it all did not stick after 48 hours !!!!... time for more degreasing and sanding of joints then there was some Grrrrr! moments with lighting.. why do I do this to myself ;D
over 400mm long !!!

A bit gappy in places

All I have to do now is fill the chasms... paint it and base it all in two weeks.. easy :o :o :o

First off congrats on getting that together an I am sorry to hear about your epoxy issues (been there done that with epoxy!! :icon_crap:)

Secondly don't rush it, odds are we will have an extension that could add a couple extra weeks so don't get in the deadline panic attack  :)
