Title: Saab Lansen
Post by: Daryl J. on March 20, 2016, 03:44:06 AM
Alternative radar.  Exocet. Extra fuel. Canadian.

U.S. Army ground attack, Vietnam.    It just seems the shape would take overall Huey Green quite well.

Exocet.

Don't forget that the Lansen already carried anti-ship missiles - 2 Rb04s:

This combined with its useful around capability:

A 32A - Ground-attack and maritime-strike
J 32B - All-weather fighter
S 32C - Specialised maritime and photo reconnaissance

Often makes me think it would have done nicely as the backbone of a carrier air wing with some operating as attackers, some as all-weather fighters and some as recon.  Maybe also give some a buddy refuelling capability.

The German profile has me wondering if the Lansen could fill a gap if the Fiat G.91 hadn't succeded.

I could see a stripped down version of the Lansen being a workable platform for jobs the G.91 did.

Lots of scope for Whiffing the Lansen into the Portuguese Colonial War as the Portuguese did use their G.91s in that conflict. The Portuguese also had some quite fetching schemes on the their G.91s over the years that would probably look good on the Lansen too.

Keeping with Germany, and extending it to navy service, the Lansen would probably look pretty cool toting a pair of Kormoran missiles.

Been toying with the idea of the RAAF Citizen Air Force Interceptor Squadrons continuing through to today.  Mustangs and Mosquitoes replaced with Vampires that are supplemented with Venom NFs/Sea Venoms, which in turn are replaced with Tunnans, Lansens and eventually Drakens, Viggens and Gripens.  The Tunnan would be the interceptor while the Lansen would initially serve as a Citizen AF FAW (in very large interceptor Squadrons, each with three day fighter and two or three night fighter flights) before slotting into other roles within the regular AF, serving well after the last CAF FAWs are replaced by JA37s then Gripens.

It would be able to though I think most would find the Lansen as being too big/heavy to fulfil the role of a light fighter.  Compare the Specs of the Lansen and the G.91 to see what I mean.

That's why I mentioned "stripped down" elsewhere in my post.

If it could be made available in a downgraded, cheaper and possibly lightened version; it might be a light fighter option.

While there was a Recce version, how about an American one with a chisel nose not unlike the RF-101's shape?

I like your way of thinking Daryl. Let's see what I can do in 1/72. I have two Heller Lansens and RF-101s in the stash. I am sure it can be done.

Not sure if you saw my RF-102A (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5632.0)?

Nice!   I hadn't so thanks.

It could be Israeli, Canadian, Norwegian, Khemed.

Y'know, when you look at how capable the Lansen was on the power of 1 x Avon, it makes you realise how limited the Hunter was. If the Hunter had been just a bit bigger it could have been much better, for very little penalty in performance.
