Thanks Apophenia, there's three nights work in that plateing one to stick it on, one to paint it, and one to weather it. The back story explains the bizarre paint scheme.

  • An outstanding, creative builder.
I started this one a few years ago. It got abandoned right after a base coat and some masking applied.  i decided recently to clear up a few of the oldies on the shelf. Amazingly, the masking hadn't damaged the base coat. Probably because I used a spray can of Krylon Brilliant Silver. That stuff sure is tough. It didn't peel off at all. I finished it with Model Master Metalizers. The decals are from the Academy F-51 Korean War Mustang.

The original story was an idea to convert the P-51 to jet power as an interim measure during the later part of WWII. I figured with the low power jet engines available, two would be better. I constructed the engines from some old drop tanks. I removed the intakes from the nose and reshaped it and added 4x .50 cal machine guns, since wing guns were removed to fit the jets. I moved the main gear wells aft to make it a tricycle gear and added a wheel well in the nose. Obviously, the belly radiator was removed as well. I added some 5 inch rockets and tip tanks for a combat ground attack mission.

Never trust a man who tells you that you have too many paints, for he is obviously a liar and will most likely try to deceive you again in future.

Guys, in a move that may illicit some controversy, I am not going to run a vote for this GB.  In my eyes, you are all winners for finishing off those long ignored builds.  Well done.

Steps on soapbox ........

I'm a little dis-chuffed that there is not going to be a vote as part of the fun of group builds is to compete against your peers, also this group build is well subscribed with some killer builds that makes for stiff competition.

Steps off soapbox .........

Having got that minor rant off my chest, I do understand why  the poll hasn't happened, some of the entries are incomplete others have no pictures which makes it an uneven playing field which would make a poll unfair.

Also it may be some time before the are complete which will cause the group build to drag on.

Bottom line is I enjoyed building my entries and received some kind comments from my peers, that is one of  the foundations of Beyond the Sprues and I'm happy with that.

So I'll just shut up for now and look forward to this year's activities.

Considering that it has/had been decided that the 'Clear your Workbench' GB was to be all year and then every year, it might be worth considering calling it a 'Theme Build' which is open ended instead --- and open to anything you have going --
