This is a classic:

V-STOL Concepts and Developed Aircraft A Historic Report Volume 1 (1940-1986)

http://contrails.iit.edu/DigitalCollection/1986/AFWALTR86-3071volume01.pdf

Despite the title, it covers some vehicles from before 1940.

Some recent inspiration from Secret Projects (posted by fightingirish):

Quote
In November 1981 Bell Helicopters presented their concept of an anti-tank helicopter, the Panzerabwehrhubschrauber – 2 (PAH-2), to the German Army.
This concept was based on the Bell Model 249 Cobra. It had a 4-blade main rotor (a smaller version of the Bell Model 412 main rotor). It was powered by a single General Electric T700 engine with max. 1650shp.

The Martin Marietta Target Acquisition and Designation Sights, Pilot Night Vision System (TADS/PNVS) is the combined sensor and targeting unit which was fitted on the nose. There were 4 stations on the stubbed wings to hold weapons like HOT anti-tank missiles, unguided missiles, Stinger A2A missiles, gun pods etc. Like other PAH-2 concepts at that time, this concept also did not have a central chain gun. Later on the AGM-114 Hellfire might have been integrated.

The Bell Model 249 PAH-2 would have been built under licence by Dornier at their final production site near Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. At that site the Bell UH-1D were already built under licence for service with the German Army and German Air Force. The US Army in Europe also had their older AH-1 Cobra models upgraded at that site (AH-1Q’s to AH-1S’s ?).

Might make for a very interesting whiff

^ Very interesting indeed. *eyes-numerous-Cobras-and-Apaches-and-Tigers-in-the-stash*

To think that it was proposed more than thirty years ago and that the actual winner of the PAH-2 tender, the EC 665Tiger, has entered Bundeswehr service only recently.... :icon_surprised: :-X

Cheers,
Moritz

Something I dreamt up sometime ago, sketched them back in the 80's before I found what computers were -- This was about the time Airwolf used to be on TV.

To give an idea of the size of the Heavy Lift helicopters, the car in the drawing is a 78 Camaro ( I measured up the wife's old car back then)

The top and bottom drawings are compound helicopters, while the middle drawing is of a more conventional layout although the little helicopter that is there is another compound one.  It was while drawing up the little helicopter that I worked out that an Airwolf type helicopter hadn't a hope in flying (very fast that is), so I tried to come up with something that might, hence the bottom design.

Just a whif AU suggestion, suppose that Argentina had purchase Harriers when they were first demonstrated to them, either as "Harriers" direct from Britain or as "Matadors" as the Spanish bought their AV-8S aircraft.  Just how might this have affected the conflict in the Falklands/Malvinas?

I keep thinking of one with Sidewinders on the outboard wing stations, "Martin Pescador" ASM's on the inboard wing stations and a guidance pod on the centerline station.

I was rather thinking of one of their land-based schemes; got a set of Falklands/Malvinas decals that include more than one.  If nothing else, they'd make the success of the Black Buck flights more problematical.

Just a thought, some of the Bell Quad Tilt-rotor proposals used a C-130 fuselage as a starting point, how about an international one using an AN-12 fuselage?
