F-23 Blackhawks
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:32:50 AM »
I'm looking to get some models built this year. So I'm going to build one for this GB. This is the DML YF-23. I started on it a couple days ago. Here is a photo of the box art and the work so far. Which is basically, the cockpit painted and installed.

This will be in the markings of the "Blackhawks." Some of you old heads may remember this from the comics decades ago. This is the insignia. I will make decals of this artwork.

Great idea using the Blackhawks logo.

nils,

Haven't decided on the paint job jet. I am debating a retro scheme or something more modern with a hint of the old colors.

Here it is assembled. I will glue on the tails after painting.

Actually, I put a primer coat on it but haven't had the chance to photograph it.

Got it finished and it looks pretty good.  But there is one huge PROBLEM.  Somehow, the idiot (me) who assembled it forgot to put any weight in the nose, so it's a tail sitter. Haven't decided how to handle this yet.

If you remember the Blackhawks Comics from decades ago (when I was a kid), they often flew a/c that had been prototyped but not put into production. The Grumman F5F and Lockheed F-90 being the primary examples. So it's obvious that in today's time, the best prototype that didn't go into production would be the F-23.

Here's a closeup of the artwork. This was copied from some internet sources and then sized and printed on plain white decal film.  They turned out pretty good.

Not the best camera for real closeups. Sorry.

Has it got an Arrestor hook?  Maybe deploy that to 'arrest' the tail sitting?

The trouble with putting the hook down, is that for stealth reasons, the hook is inside a closed compartment when not deployed. This would mean cutting and building an open bay. But I've thought of just adding the hook and saying the h&ll with it.
