Since the image above is of M31/The Andromeda Galaxy, we're about 2.5 million light years from either of those  locations.

This is where we are:

M31 is about 20- 25 Milky Way diameters away. The more you know...

Greg, you can't requisition a whole galaxy to store your stash; there are laws against that! Why not use M32? (The little elliptical blob above M31) nobody lives there anymore.

Bah!  Laws don't count when one has this sort of tech...

Mind you, who is to say Earth isn't really there... ;)

Why? Is it the intergalactic equivalent of a pioneer ghost town? ??? Haunted, perhaps? ::)

Really? Which one?  Who's legal jurisdiction is M32 in anyway? ;)

Getting back to some inspiration…

I give you Sea Dragon - perhaps one of the best examples of the Big, Dumb booster concept.  Was supposedly going to be capable of lifting 1.1 million pounds (550 metric tons) into a 306 nautical-mile circular orbit — about four times the payload of a Saturn V. :o  The rocket itself was 75 feet in diameter and 500 feet tall, not including the ballast platform needed to launch it at sea. A capsule and escape tower would have added another 50 feet! :o

Now to put this into a little context (alongside a Saturn V):

Or if you prefer ;):

It's a dwarf spheroidal galaxy that has been cannibalized by it's parent, M31. What's left are old (8-14Gyr) and somewhat metal poor stars (which is bad for Real Estate). It's a slum with no good bars or restaurants or things to do.
"Oh look, another old red giant! No useful planets,  just comets, asteroids and a gas giant. Check. That makes it what, Bob? our 10 millionth? Sign up and see the Universe they said. Bored with our Galaxy? Join the Andromeda Galaxy Expedition, they said. Here's a special project just for you and your team - Catalog M32. It'll be exciting, they said. Last time I volunteer for anything..."

got 'A vertical empire' by C.N.Hill book on loan from my local library today. Has quite a few line drawings of rockets, what was and what could have been. Also on page 325 there is a chapter called 'The 'might have been's' On page 330 there is a reference to a short story called 'Prospero One' by Stephen Baxter.

A quick Google search and I found this- http://bookre.org/reader?file=196894
I have no idea if this is the whole story, but it looks interesting. Or is it Brrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiittttttttttsssssssss innnnnnnnnnn Spaaaaaaccccceeeeeeeee!!!!

A couple of books that may inspire:

I'm reading Old Mars which is an anthology of modern SF about Mars written in the retro style of pre-space exploration SF (with Martians, etc.). I'm half way through the book and so far every story has been entertaining. The rocketship on the book cover is great: http://www.stephenyoull.com/stephenyoull.com/GALLERY/Pages/HARDWARE.html#5
The artist is Stephen Youll and he has other cool work in his gallery.

Even more retro is the Frank R, Paul Art Book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1613772777/ref=oh_details_o01_s02_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
He did pulp magazine covers in the 30s - 60s. Here's a Google Image Search of his work.

Examples:
