RSAF Typhoon
« on: October 06, 2013, 08:51:12 PM »
OK, so when I said I might be motivated into dabbling in the dark arts of aircraft construction, you really didn't think I was going to waste good tank money buying an aircraft model did you?  I'm fairly broadminded but there are limits don't you know.  :o

I found this kit hidden in a cupboard (bought for my youngest daughter when she was going through an 'I quite fancy being in the Air Cadets' mood) and thought that it would be just the ticket - wings and a propeller so it must be an aircraft and yet small enough that I can retain plausible deniability should anyone question by antics too closely.

I have my backstory and a clear image in my mind of what I want the end product to look like - I just need to see if I can make what is sitting in front of me match my expectations.  So where do the tracks go...

Ah that would be just too obvious...  ;)  This is going to be a RSAF circa 1944 effort.

Just a quick question to avoid personal confusion re: RSAF. Is it;

1.) Royal Scottish Air Force;
2.) Republic of Scotland Air Force; or
3.) Ruddy Scots Air Force?

And, perhaps to avoid confusion with the Saudi's, should it be SRAF* (Scottish/Scots Republic Air Force)?

:)

The answer is Royal Scottish Air Force (RSAF) along similar lines to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).  Any confusion with the modern day Royal Saudi Air Force is unfortunate but as you will see from my backstory, Scotland got there first!

My backstory...

This timeline is set in a Scotland that shares a geographical and economic arrangement with England similar to modern day Canada and the USA but with a constitutional arrangement more akin to New Zealand and Australia.

Scotland and England have shared a monarch since the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne from his double first cousin twice removed, Queen Elizabeth I. Although described as a Union of Crowns, there are in fact two separate Crowns resting on the same head (as opposed to the implied creation of a single Crown and a single Kingdom).  There have been three attempts in 1606, 1667, and 1689 to unite the two countries by Acts of Parliament, but ultimately all proved fruitless for a variety of different reasons.  It was not until the early 18th century that both political establishments came to support the idea, of a constitutional, economic and by association, military alliance in the shape of a commonwealth of nations.

The Acts took effect on 1 May 1707. On this date, the Scottish Parliament and the English Parliament formally established the Commonwealth of Great Britain. On the Commonwealth, historian Simon Schama said "What began as an economic merger, would end in a full partnership in the most powerful going concern in the world ... it was one of the most astonishing transformations in European history."

During WW1, the armed forces of Scotland and England fought alongside the other major member nations of the now expanded Commonwealth (England, Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa).  In a mirror of the formation of England’s Royal Flying Corps (RFC), the Army of Scotland (the Royal Regiments of Scotland) established the Army Air Corps (AAC).  As the conflict dragged on into 1918, the lessons learned and technological developments in the employment of air power led the English to establish the world’s first independent air force in the shape of the Royal Air Force (RAF).  Five days later the Royal Scottish Air Force (RSAF) stood up as an independent arm of service and thus became the world’s second air force.

During the interwar years, economic and military ties within the Commonwealth continued apace so that by the start of WW2 the militaries of each member nation, whilst not identical, shared common doctrines, training, tactics and the majority of their weapon systems.

Such was the cooperation and interoperability that the northern anchorage of the Royal Scottish Navy (Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands) was also home to a significant proportion of the Royal Navy (RN).  Several air bases were constructed to provide local air defence for this critical naval base; the largest of which was Skeabrae AB.  With its northerly location also providing access to the Norwegian mainland and coastal waters, Skeabrae AB was, by 1944, home to no less than 9 Sqns of fighters and strike aircraft:

66 Sqn RAF (Spitfire)
118 Sqn RAF (Spitfire)
313 (Czechoslovak) Sqn (Spitfire)
329 (Norwegian) Sqn (Typhoon)
331 (Norwegian) Sqn (Typhoon)
622 Sqn RSAF (Typhoon)
51 Sqn RSAF (Beaufighter)
58 Sqn RSAF (Beaufighter)
253 Sqn RNZAF (Beaufighter)

My model will depict a RSAF Typhoon of 622 Sqn, of the Skeabrae AB Long-Range Fighter Wg in June 1944.

I'm in the process of making my own decals for my RSAF Typhoon.  The biggest pain is, of course, that my inkjet printer does not print white and if I use white decal paper you then have to have the hands and patience of a brain surgeon to cut them out.  I'm an Infantryman and so, by definition, have the manual dexterity of an arthritic ant!  :(  I'm going to go with the clear decal paper and do a bit of background pre-colouring... just another layer of complication.  IT'S ALL SO MUCH EASIER WITH AFVs!!!  :o

Taking a leaf out of JP Vieira's inspirational book, I have drawn up some decals which I will then print out.  The image below of said decals was printed out on plain paper during the scaling process.  The extra copies are for the inevitable cock ups along the way.  ;)

That might have to be the fall back, although you then have a double thickness of decal and they are already thicker than I would prefer.

Decals look sensational.
These decal films are so thin you will not notice two layers.

One method I have tried to get a white background is to get some rub down Letraset type circle shapes.
don't know if this sort of thing is still available though.

Thanks for your support and advice.  Construction is finally proceeding and the majority of the decals are on and they look pretty damned sweet although I say it myself.  Even the Saltire on the rudder has come out better than expected even though it was a bitch to apply and trim.

I would normally post pictures of my builds as I go along but this being my first aircraft and all, I'm a bit bashful.  :-[  Plus as it features a fairly radical paint job - for a Typhoon - I will wait until the wee beastie is complete if you don't mind.  ;)

Well I guess this is it.  I'm definitely going to stick to armour in the future... way too many fiddly bits and never ending painting with aircraft for my liking!!  :o

Anyhoo, as per my backstory, the model depicts a Royal Scottish Air Force (RSAF) Typhoon 1B of 622 Sqn - part of the Skeabrae Air Base, Long-Range Fighter Wing based on the Orkney Islands.  The Wing's primary mission is air interdiction over occupied Norway and escorting the Beaufighter Strike Wing also based at Skeabrae AB (although not immediately apparent from these pictures, the model is sporting 2 drop tanks).  The Typhoon's two-tone colour scheme mirrors the dark blue/grey of the North Sea and the medium grey of the cloud cover that is an almost permanent feature of the North of Scotland.  The 'invasion' stripes are standard and part of the deception plan of Op Fortitude North which was intended to convince the Germans of an impending Allied landing somewhere along the Norwegian cost.
